Ryan was appointed by the county board yesterday to open a drive to reduce the 400 million dollar unpaid property tax accumulation in the county. The first step by the committee, Ryan said, will be to attack the personal property tax delinquency which accounts for 260 million dollars of the back tax total. The remainder is unpaid real estate taxes. County Auditor Lee J. Howard was instructed by the committee to start immediately to break down the unpaid personal property levies for the last 14 years as the first step in de termining what Items can be col lected.

Recent Bills Come First. Howard said his staff will deal with unpaid bills for recent years, because these are more likely to be collected than the old Items. He will make reports as the survey proceeds. and action to collect the unpaid bills then will be up to the committee. In addition to Ryan and Howard the committee members are William Bussee.

LONDON, March 1Z George Stuart Gordon, president of Magdalen col lege, Oxford, died today. He was 61 years old. EX JUDGE NAMED TO HEAR PLEA FOR FARE BOOST Charles A. McDonald, former Judge of the Circuit, Superior, and Appel late courts, was named by Circuit Court Judge Cornelius J. Harrington as a special master to hear evidence in the elevated lines' suit for an in junction to Increase lares from 10 to 12 cents.

The Injunction suit, which also seeks a boost from 10 to 13 cents In the rate for intercompany rides be tween the and street car and bus routes, was started last month after the Illinois Commerce commission had denied the elevated road's petition for the Increases. Assistant Attorney General William R. Morgan, who Is opposing the in creases In behalf of the commerce commission, yesterday asked Judge Harrington to withhold the appoint ment of a master until Monday. Mor gan said he wanted to file amendments to his answer to the lines' suit. The court, said amendments could be filed any time, but said the reference to a master should not be delayed.

COURT AWARDS DRY ICE BLAST VICTIM $3,750 Mario La Russo, 13 years old, was awarded a Judgment for $3,750 yes terday by Judge Jacob Berkowitz of Mattoon, sitting In Superior court, against the Powell Brothers Trucking Lines, Springfield, Mo. A jury was dismissed and Judge Berkowitz en tered the Judgment by agreement. Young La Russo, a newsboy, was seriously Injured June 27, 1940, when dry ice which he put into a bottle exploded. Testimony showed that the dry ice was kicked to the pavement by a man unloading poultry from a Powell Brothers truck at a warehouse at 52 East Hubbard street. The case is said to be the first involving damage from dry ice in Illinois and perhaps in the country.

The plaintiff was represented by the firm of Chesrow and Hollowick. WOMAN IXJtBED IN TALL. Mra. Anna Harding', 63 years old. 18.12 South Kedxie avenue, was1 injured critically yesterday when she fell from a second floor flat at 14-0 South Avera avenue where elie had been employed to wash the windows.

Philip McGnire. Philip McGuire. who was dean of police juvenile officers when he re tired In 1936, died last evening In his home at 7336 Coles avenue. He was 74 years old, a native of Ireland. Mr.

McGuire had been a member of the police force 45 years. He leaves his widow, Catherine, and six sons. John Deerbr. John Deerinz, 51 years old. an elec trical engineer, died of a heart at tack yesterday in the Riverside rail road depot.

Mr. Deering was born In Highland Park and had lived In Riverside for 15 years. His home was at 170 Aikenside road. Surviving are his widow. Fern; two sons, and a daughter.
