Dailly States) It appears that during the last two or three years the Ohio Congressmen have been active in seeking to establish by an act of Congress what they call "the dollar a day ipension." Thie Democratic Congressmen from that State have vied with the Republican in urging a pension of $30 a month for every survivor of the Civil war who fought on the Union side.

and it was recently indorsed by the Ohio Democratic platform. The proposition was presented by a number of Grand Army Posts before the national encampment of the G. A. R. at Atlantic City, but it was rejected on the ground of the need of national economy.

The payment of $30 a mouth to every esurviving Federal veteran would mean an enormous addition to the annual expenditures of the national government, hence the, Grand Army of the Republic did well in declining to recommend it. Last year the United Sltates paid in pension $162,000,000, and the number of persons on the penusion rolls was 946,000, of whom 646,000 were classified as invalids, and 300,000 as widows, etc. An average of about 50,000 pensiouers are claimed by death every year, but the number of persons granted pensions by act of Congress or under Roosvelt's exeecutLve order was 46,0010 last year, and only onoe in thirty years has the number run under 30,000. The pension budget this year calls for $155,000,000 and while under the operation of present laws a decline of several millions may be looked for every year it will be a long time before the expenditure for pensions falls below 5100,000,000.
