D. to continue his fijht to obtain an increase in diversion of lake water thru the Illinois waterway. He is also scheduled to speak on "The Small Business Man at the annual conference of mayors, of which he is vice president. Altho the war department has turned down the plea for an increase from the present 1.500 cubic feet a cond to 10,000 cubic feet a second, the mayor Mid he will consult with Thomas J. Parran.

United States aur-seon general, and officials in the war department, pointing out the dire ried for the greater amount of diversion. Opinion Support Hit Stand. In his brief case, as he boarded a piar; yesterday. Mayor Kelly carried medical opinions backing his stand. These follow: Dr.

Ernest E. Irons, University of Chicago: "After going over the records for the last 15 years of evidence cf the pollution of the Chicago water supply at the southerly intake crib. I Cud chlorination has protected the community up to this time. However, row the pollutional index, as measured by the presence of colon bacilli, fcai risen to an alarming point. The point is rapidly approaching when a million and a half people in this district may have difficulties from the water despite chlorination." Dr.

George E. Wakerlin, professor and head of the department of physi-clcgy cf the University of Illinois: In ray scientific judgment, the problem should be met for the present by an increase of water from Lake Michigan via the Calumet river and the Sag channel. I am most emphatically of the opinion that this should be done without delay as an emergency measure to safeguard the health cf the people of the south Side of Chicago." Dr. Fishbein Favors Increase. Dr.

Louis Fishbein of the Journal rf the American Medical association: It woald seem desirable as a war treasure or until adequate sewage piar.t construction and water purification have been developed, to provide such additional diversion of water Irrm Lake Michigan as might be retired." Another statement was from Faul Kar.sen, member of the firm of Greeley Hansen, a leading water-wcrks engineering company, who wrote: "Chlorination is an insecure barrier against the possibility cf a water-borne epidemic. There can be ro doubt as to the practical wisdom cf temporary greater diversion in the interests of public health." F.
