Local News. Ladies, or airSkln and Compleion -Judge G. A. Fournet of Lake Charles, made a short visit here this week" -The incessant rains after the plowing of Main street, have rendered it quite muddy. -Mr.

Gaston Bienvenu of Noew Orleans is spending a week here with relatives and friends. -Our editor took a little vacation this week; he went to New Orleans with the children on the excursion. -Several strangers have visited this parish lately with a view of investing in real estate; but it appeals that it is a difficult thing to buy any quantity of land in this parish: -The legislature adjourned sine die Thursday last, without having accomplished any important work, but the members drew their salaries, which, to them, was the most important feature of the whole session. --11r. Henry Beslin has conmtnenced working the Main street, and is doing a nice work.

When this street is finished it.will be in condition to stand ahy spell of wet weather during the winter months, -An apsj'll for aid h6 blen trade by the peo0plo of Cahthoula 'parish, whera thousands of people are destitu, king overflowed, and not having anything to eat. They qre now eilttirly dependant tlt public charity ot starvation will be their uufortuntite lot. --Theo ioli'o officer ha4 Comtnenced td slautghter tht- clogs fodtltl roving on the street iof this town: We hope he will only stop the good work when there will he ho more material for him to work on. One i report say it is Mr. E. Du- champ, the present presidett of the july, and another report say it is Mr. Cormiet. For the I second ward, Charles Gatekunsts, for the third ward Valery M.

Guilbeanu, for the fourth ward I Omer Martih, faor the fifth ward H. David. -The great questitan which is now secupying the people's attention is the question of levees and outletb. Levees are certainly a failuate, they do not protect at least they have not protected the people from this parish, neither have they protected the people of other sections; then, they are a failure. Now let us try the outlet system which we believe is the only reasonable solution of the high water question.

The levee experiment has been too costly to our people, and they have enough of it. Let them have the outlet system or nonre at all. If the out let does no good, then abandon a the whole thing. Why should a those unfortunate people spend ti aillions of their hard earings on levees that do not and will never protect them, is it not an imposiion? 7)T III BROWN' IRON umsI l(). It CeN quickl.

FOe sale by aU dMim Lu asm a Grapes In Louisiana. 2 Recent experience in grape culture in this region indicate the ke perfect success of the finest variere ties of grapes fron France and California. Several of the best he varieties of Frence and California n- grapes have been fruited this season and have done remarkably well. Several hundred vines were brought here a year ago last winter and planted in and around Lake Charles. They are making a- a splendid growth and are ly healthy.

If-as now seems le certain-we can succeed well with these fine grapes we have another t- big thing in this country. While we may not equal California in it the production of raisins, we can surely "knock her out" in the mitrkets of the North with fresh grapes. For we can deliver our grapes in a few hours in the mart kets of the North with small expense for transportation, while California must take several days to transport her grapes to the same market and pay a large sum for transportation. Our pine woods hind will pro- hably be our best grape land, and will-in case the grape culture proves the success now indicated -inctease in value, enormously. Truly, the outlook for Southwest Louisiana is Charles American.

Roseland, Tangipahoa parish, Louisiana, is a town of 500 inhabitants, situated on the main line of the great Illinois Central railroad, 70 miles north of New Orleans. It is a colony of northern who came from every State in the North. Pre-eminently successful from the first it now con- I tains, after a little more than two years' existence, two large saw mills, a manufaeturing establishinent--that manufactures step- ladders, wheel-barrowsi a boards, brick yards, one already established and one just I located which will have a capacity of 25,000 bricks per day, two gen- eral stores, a drug store, meat Jr market, newspaper office, wagon and blacksmith shops, and a fine hotel. A large and commodious school house of four rooms was built one year ago, and an effi- cient public school system inaugurated. A box factory and a canning establishment are among the enterprises of the near future.

The Roseland saw and planing ti mills were sold to Howard Wil- son, of Chicago, last Saturday. Messrs. W. H. Squires and J.

S. Reames, of New Orleans, were here the first of the week, looking A over a building site for the ma- to chinery for the brick yard, and looking up ti Herald. ii Use Plenty of Printer's Ink. It. EAsTra, D)eputy CleL of Court. The story of the goose that laid the golden egg may have been a good anecdote in the old times before the great West was, discovered, but a story from Butte, overtops it. A few, days ago J. A.

McConville, who lives in Mon- tuna street, killed one of his chick- ens for diflner and was surprised to lfnd a qantity of gold nuggets in its crop and gizzard. Having thirty-one thickens that had scratched in the same patch, he began mortem prepecting on them. In elch he found nuggets, and the total qutantity gathered I had a cash value of $387. The a gold was sold to the State National Bank and pronounced 18karat fine. Mr.

McConville bought fifty chicketfs and turned them out to do scratch mining on the gold fields surrounding his hen- coop. After four days he killed one chicken and mined $2 worth 1 of gold from its Landry Clarien. PorBlwd, Bladder, The Courier is indebted to Mr. C. W.
