Travis Fowler, last year's leading rusher, has battled injuries, and Davis said, "It's hard to run an offense, especially the kind I like to run, without a tailback." What the Wildcats have is a strong-armed quarterback, Clayton Smith, and a pair of talented receivers, Brandon Thomason and BJ. Brockman, and the three have helped to awaken a slumping offense. Woodmont scored 44 points in its first five games, then 36 in the past two weeks. The Wildcats are 1-6 (0-2 in the Appalachian AA), but they're showing signs of life, with region leader Chapman (6-1, 2-0) coming to town tonight.

Smith has passed for nearly 700 yards, almost half of it in the past two weeks. Thomason has 13 catches in the last two games, Brockman nine. Davis said opponents were piling up defenders near the line of scrimmage, and the spread particularly the short passing game has been a good remedy. "This season's not (over)," Davis said. "It's been a long season for us, but there are three ball games left.

We need to win these three games to get in the playoffs, and that's what we're telling our kids." Hillcrest wide receiver draws special attention After setting a school season record for receptions with 56 in 1999, Hillcrest's Jada Sullivan has seen a lot of double-coverage this year. The biggest benefactors have been receiver Ryan McKie, who leads the Upstate with 41 catches, and quarterback Ricky Stevens. "We run a lot of trips, putting three on one side and one on the other," Feltz said. "If they don't double-cover Jada, we throw to him. And when they double-cover, then they can't cover as well on the other side.

So it kind of helps the quarterback read what side to throw to." Sullivan has still managed 32 receptions for the Rams (2-5), who will play host to North Augusta (4-3) tonight. "We've studied for hours, seeing if there's anything we can do to them, and we haven't found a thing," Carlisle said.

Clinton found a way to beat the Yellow Jackets, and Riverside quarterback Steven Bright gave them fits in a 45-34 loss last week. Other than that, Greer (6-1, 3-1 in Peach Blossom AAA) has been rolling. None of the Jackets' success has left Greer coach Stuart Holcombe at ease. Not with Eastside on deck, and not with the way the Jackets performed last week. "If we don't tackle better this week than we did last week, it might not even be a game," Holcombe said.

"I know Bright probably had a lot to do with it, because he's a really good player. I'm hoping he had a lot to do with it." The Jackets were able to overcome the Warriors, largely because quarterback Mazzie Drummond passed for 165 yards and rushed for 148. The problem, Carlisle said, is Drummond has help. "They've just got so many things they can do to you," he said. "The quarterback's a great one, they've got a quality receiver (Courtney Wright) and the offensive line does an outstanding job of blocking for (Drummond).

You can't get to him. "And defensively they're better than they were last year, and they were awful tough last year." with VIP SPA ACCUPRESSURE STEAM SAUNA RELAXATION 271-3112 1417-F Laurent Rd.
