Ph. 9951. 8 i]5 ek |] ]5 Increased Crop Is 'Possible' RALEIGH V?)— A $41,000.000 Increase in the annual farm crop income of North Carolina can be achieved -simply by changing to recommended varieties of corn, small grain, and tobacco, believes W. E. Col well, head of the Department of Agronomy at North Carolina State College. "It is shocking to realize," says CoUvell, "that of the state's huge tobacco crop. Tour acres out of every 10 are planted to varieties which are not recommended and which have even been shown inferior. If only the best varieties wre grown, the tobacco farmers ol North Carolina would produce an additional 44,400,000 pounds of tobocco per year which would mean an increased income of more than $23 000,000." Similarly, he points out. only about one-third oi the state's corn crop is planted to high-yielding hybrids. The loss from failure to follow recommendations in choosing the type of corn to plant amounts to nearly 516,000,000 each year. The story is the same.
