Sports PAGE C8 STAR TRIBUNE 1 TUESDAY, OCTOBER 5 1999 offman named Big Ten defensive player of the week By Mark Craig Star Tribune Staff Writer Sean Hoffman isn't sure which is more satisfying, winning his first Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week award or earning one of the highest weekly grades in three seasons from the Gophers coaching staff, "I think it's easier to get a degree from this school than it is to grade well (in a football game," Hoffman joked on Mon- "Anything from 80 to 85 for an inside linebacker is considered a winning performance, Stripling said. Injury update Cornerback Willie Middle-brooks (hamstring) returned to practice for the first time in two weeks Poole and Hall aren't as seriously injured as first expected, coach Glen Mason said. Receiver Antoine Henderson (separated shoulder) has a better chance of playing, Mason said. Notes Saturday's game starts at 11:10 a.m. It will be televised by either ESPN2 or Ch.

4, depending on the baseball playoffs. The Illinois game Oct 16 will be televised on ESPN2. There have been 59,000 tickets sold for the Wisconsin game. The first 25,000 fans through the gates Saturday will receive foam axes. The Gophers still have tickets remaining in their Badger-Boiler Blowout promotion.

For $48, one can buy tickets to the Wisconsin game and the Oct 30 Purdue game. Alvarez won't be here Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez won't be in Minneapolis on Saturday when his Badgers take on the Gophers. He'll be watching from a hospital room 75 miles away. The 52-year-old Alvarez is scheduled to undergo knee replacement surgery Tuesday at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Alvarez will be confined to his bed for at least four days after the procedure, and doctors are uncertain when he'll be able to return to the sideline.

On Saturday, Alvarez will be recovering in a room equipped with a large screen television and a phone line that connects him to the Wisconsin coaching staff. The Associated Press contributed to this report GOPHERS NOTES day. "But that was the best game I've played in a long time here, maybe the best ever. The junior from Fargo, N.D., had 12 tackles, including a school-record six tackles for losses in Saturday's 33-14 victory at Northwestern. He received a grade of 84 out of 100 from linebackers coach Steve Stripling.

ComeH 0 Collegewomen UPPER MIDWEST StOlaf JV 3, Bethany Lutheran 0 GOPHERS from CI Wisconsin's Dayne causes anguish for opposing tacklers Iowa defensive back Matt Bowen once compared a close encounter with Dayne to trying to stop a couch headed down a flight of stairs. "He's a load," Gophers junior linebacker Sean Hoffman said. "He's a lot different than anything I saw, especially in high school in Fargo, N.D. He'd be as big as three guys put together. He's the biggest guy in this conference to try and bring down, but you can't be intimidated." There is little element of surprise in Wisconsin's offense.

"It isn't too hard to figure out what we have to do," Ohio State coach John Cooper said before the game. "If Dayne's in the game, tackle Dayne. Number 33. He's the big guy back there." After Ohio State held No. 33 to 36 yards and no touchdowns in the first half, the Buckeyes withered.

It was Dayne, set, match. The victory stabilized the Badgers after a shocking 17-12 loss to Cincinnati and a 21-16 loss to Michigan in their Big Ten opener. It also revitalized Dayne's campaign for the Heis-man Trophy. "There's a lot of great players on the team, not just me," Dayne said. "That's what makes a team.

If it wasn't for those other players, I wouldn't be where I'm at" Dayne needs to average just over 157 yards per game to eclipse Ricky Williams career NCAA Division I-A rushing record. Williams finished his Texas career with 6,279 yards; Dayne has 5,336 (bowl games aren't included in NCAA totals). Against the Gophers last season, Dayne carried 35 times for 133 yards and one touchdown in the Badgers' 26-7 victory in Madison. Should Dayne break loose into the Gophers secondarya ball-toting Gulliver among the Lilliputians he'll outweigh the largest defender by 58 pounds. Strong safety Tyrone Carter, at 184 pounds, will be one of the pursuers.

"It's like tackling a brick wall," Carter said. "The key is just to hit him hard. You see the truck, and you've just got to knock it down." Dayne played at 270 pounds in high school. He has gained 773 yards in 133 carries this season with, by all accounts, little use for flashiness or trash-talk. He runs.

He tramples. He runs again. Dayne's powerful, business-like approach is the sort of challenge a linebacker loves. "I remember the game last year," Hoffman said. "I tackled him for a loss one time and he probably ran over me once or twice.

In a game like that, you're going to get your licks on him and he's going to get his. The key is to end up on top, both individually and as a team." GGLF Collegemen WINDON MEMORIAL At I aha ForMt, HI. Kent State 291 Washington 292. USC 293, Swedish National Team 293. Kansas 296.
