WASHINGTON (AP) i a i presidential nominee Sen. Robert Dole, seeking to keep peace within party ranks, is urging GOP moderates and liberals to take an active role in the campaign. Dole told a news conference Monday that he had asked Maryland liberal Republican Sen. Charles McC: Mathias to participate in the campaign, saying that "I told him I agreed with him. We've got to get everybody into the campaign.

We have a big tent and we're trying to broaden it." Mathias had said in a televised interview 1 Sunday that liberal Republicans will look for "other alternatives" if they are excluded from the campaign. Dole, who met with the press after receiving an administration briefing on national security and foreign affairs, said he extended the same appeal for help to GOP liberal Senfc. Edward W. Brooke of Massachusetts and Mark C. Hatfield of Oregon.

But at the same time. Dole said that his own role in the campaign won't be entirely clear until he meets later this week with President Ford in Vail, Colo. He said, however, that he expects to help in "keeping the record straight" by examining positions taken by Democratic presidential candidate Jimmy Carter. His first opportunty to do just that will come this week. White House Press Secretary Ron Nessen said President Ford was sending Dole to Seattle Wednesday and Des Moines Thusday where he will follow appearances by- Carter at an American Legion convention and the Iowa State Fair.

WASHINGTON (AP) the U.S. population, including illegal aliens, is 222.2 million, or 6.5 million higher than the official government estimate, a private group contends. The Environmental Fund also claims that both the birth rate and the death rate are lower than the government has reported.

The fund was founded in 1973 to draw attention to the growth. The fund's population figures were based on U.S. Bureau of the Census figures. The fund argued that the a in i a i population at 215.7 million recently, did not include 5.3 million persons whom the bureau said in 1972.were overlooked in the 1970 census. Also omitted were illegal aliens, believed to number more than one million, according to the fund's population consultant, Robert Cook.

The actual birth and date rates are lower because the Bureau of Vital Statistics based the rates on the lower 750,000 stranded in strike LOS ANGELES (AP) After the first day of a strike that left 750.000 commuters looking for other a a i negotiators for bus drivers and the Southern California Rapid Transit District are heading back to the bargaining table. A spokesman for the United Transportation Union, which represents the RTD's 4,700 drivers, said bargaining would resume this afternoon. Talks broke off at the 12:01 a a i deadline. The 1,100 mechanics and a i a workers A a a a Transit Union, also involved in contract negotiations with the district, caught officials off guardzcent. The difference between the two proposals is about $6 million over three years, according to RTD General Manager Jack Gilstrap.

RTD President Byron Cook said RTD drivers' annual wages averaged Si 6,281 last year, not including fringe benefits. official population figure, Cook said. He said that births exceeded deaths by 1.3 million in the past year, boosting the population by .59 per cent. With immigration added, U.S. population growth exceeded 1.2 per cent during the year, he said.

The Environmental Fund a i i a i restrictions and lower birth rates to reduce the nation's population growth. The fund, using figures from the Census Bureau and the United Nations, also estimated that the world's population reached 4.24 billion in midyear. The Census Bureau's estimate is 4.069 billion. The difference was primarily due to a higher fund estimate for the People's Republic of China 964.4 million. The fund claimed that "nearly all population estimates, including those of the UN and Census, have erred on the low side for more than two decades." The group claimed that the world's population was growing at 2.2 per cent a year.

At that it would quadruple in 57 years while the U.S. population was doubling, fund President Justin Blackwelder said. He said it will be impossible for the world to feed that many people. "The world has already passed i a i capacity, which means that death rates will rise until they equal birth rates, and population growth will stop," said Blackwelder. "Starvation, pestilence and war" will take an increased toll unless birth rates are cut, he warned.

prison FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) "I hope you don't land in prison," the pilot said before the 11 skydivers tumbled from the crowded plane, trying to reach ground before an approaching dust storm struck. Within minutes, seven of the parachutists were on Arizona State Prison property, several of them surrounded by guards. One jumper found himself looking into the barrel of a gun. "They just came in all around the prison.

They could have been shot," said Jim Bennett, an investigator for the Final County Sheriff's Department. Four of the parachutists were blown clear of the prison property, but as for the unfortunate seven, including a juvenile: "They were charged by the prison with trespassing. Bond was set at $220 each. They've all been released, but three spent the night in jail, "Bennett said. "They (prison guards) were worried about subversive attack, is what they told us," one of the skydivers said after he was released from jail Monday.

Bennett said the seven landed outside the main prison wall but on prison land. There was a big dust storm moving in. We tried various places to land, and were completely overloaded with sky divers and didn't fhink it was safe to land.

"Somebody said it looked like a baseball diamond down there, so we jumped. When we landed, we found out it was the prison diamond. "One guy landed about 25 yards north of the main cellblocks. He said he took about two steps, and three pickups pulled up and one guy jumped out with a gun on him." Sharber, Mercier and Valenzuela pleaded guilty to the trespassing charge and were given a lday suspended sentence. The other three adults are scheduled in court later in the week.
