'Cedar Rustlers' Busy in Idaho BOVILL, Idaho (AP) Giant cedar trees, some 300 years old, are being rustled in northern Idaho by chainsaw- toting timber thieves. "A boy becomes a man after he steals his first cedar tree," a local saying goes. And in Bovill, a logging town of 400, the Softball team is called "The 01' Cedar Thieves." A "cedar cop" has been hired by the the U.S. Forest Service and the sheriff 'of Lalah County, heart of the timberland, to patrol the backwoods. But he is frustrated by legal restrictions and the thieves' use of citizen band radios to dodge him.

Fines for convicted cedar rustlers have run from $7.50 to $57.50. There has always been poaching in the area's vast cedar forests, but it has grown worse in the last two years because cedar is in demand for fashionable shake roofs. A rustler can make $200 to $300 on the black market for a pickup truck full of illicit cedar. If pressed for an explanation, some say their logs came from trees felled by the wind or left to rot after legal timber harvests. Authorities aren't sure how much timber is illegally disappearing from the rugged, mountainous country.

But "we're talking about an awful lot of trees disappearing every year, hundreds of them," says Philip Dreisbach, logging supervisor for Diamond International. Diamond, Potlatch Burlington Northern, Milwaukee Road and the federal government own most of the cedar. Dreisbach says the rustlers usually take the best cut near the base of 100- foot trees leaving the rest of the cedar to rot. "They take only the best 20 feet out of the butt of the tree," sighs Dreisbach. He said the fallen "highgraded" trees can be sold, but at a lower price.

Page 8 Garden City Telegram Tuesday, January 13,1976 Young Hobby Club These Flowers Are Unique How to Make Petals From an old nylon stocking (that has been discarded) and some lengths of crinkly copper wire that has been removed from a piece of window screen you can make an attractive corsage of flowers. Cut a round piece of stocking two or three inches in diameter, depending upon the size the petals are to be. From a six-inch square of window screen remove several lengths of crinkled wire (see Figure 1). Bend one piece to the shape of a petal, twisting the ends together. Cover this framework with the circle of nylon, stretching the material over both sides and gathering it together at the ends of the wire.

Wind a piece of wire around it at that point. to hold the material taut. Figure 2 shows a completed petal. Make other petals the same way, then wire them together to form a flower, adding a few stamens at the center. The wire that holds the petals together should be long enough to serve as a stem and the petals together should be wrapped with green mending tape.

An artificial leaf or two may be attached to the stem. Two or more of these flowers will make an attractive little bouquet (Figure 3).
