The tire department encountered considerable difficulty in lighting the Homes, once they gained headway, on account of low water pressure. The building occupied a site on a high hill, and until the fire engine arrived no streams of consequence could be played on the (lames.

The fire attracted a large crowd to the scene. llrUk Wind lllows. I A still breeze was blowing when the lire started, and this greatly interfered with efforts to extinguish the blaze. At times it looked as if sparks from the Millsaps building would set fire to the Methodist orphanage, on West street. In fact, that structure was ig-rltcd several times, but the blazes were put out before any damage was done.

The onnipus of Millsaps was filled with men, women and children while the big building was being destroyed. The fire occurring: ns It did on a high bill, it could be seen from all parts of the city. 1'eople went to the scene in street cars, automobiles, carriages and wagons, and while offers of help in fighting the llames were numerous they were of no avail. It was learned th's morning that most of the furniture and fixtures in the building were saved. However, in the upper stories many desks that were held to the floors by screws were burned.

The destruction of the building- will not interfere with the examinations that are now in progress at the col-lego, or recitation work, as at a faculty meeting immediately after the tire arrangements to hold classes in other buildings today were perfected. l'r. jmiv iii ii. dim; at The mala building- of Millsaps college, three stories high and constructed of brick, burned to the ground last pight. at 6 o'clock. It was the second lire to occur on Millsaps campus within a year, the dormitory of the institution having been destroyed by tiames early last year. It has since been built.

The building destroyed laot night was erected 22 years ago at a cost of HO. 000. The insurance carried totaled $25,000. The rrigin of the flames is a mystery, but the general belief is that it was caused by a defective electric light wire. The fire started at an liour when the building was descried, nil classes having been dismissed, and no lectures being in progress.

It is stated there had been no fires in the structure during the day. The fire first was discovered by l. K. Sclby, a student, who wa sean-plng the bulletin hoard on the ground floor, near the main entrance. The young man stated that when he smelled the smoke he looked around and found that the recitation room used by the mathematics department, presided over by Prof.

K. Burton, was ahlaxe, and that the fire seemed to have originated in a small closet in that room. The room was on the south side of the building, which soon was a mass of flames, and on the second story. The alarm was quickly given, and students from nearby boarding houses made a rush for the building. They were powerless to stop the flames, which rapidly gained headway, and after turning in the alarm to the central fire station began to move the furniture, desks and records from the burning structure, -mong the first articles saved were the nil paintings of Maj.

Faculty Ismios Statement.

The college faculty this morning Issued the fellow ins "At the (treat tire at Millsaps oollepa last night, when the main building of the col-leiie which haw been the central building of the Rrnup ever since the college was founded twenty-live years age, burned to the ground, it was a matter of great satisfaction to the faculty ami the board of trustees to see the genuine sorrow and to hear the many sincere expressions of sympathy which the citizens of Jackson expressed while standing watching the progress of the flumes. Many who watched the lire remembered the erection of the building a ouarlor of a century ago and hail themselves contributed largely of their means to the structure. They felt a personal loss in the tire nnd realized what the burning meant to themselves and the city. On all sides the hope was indulged in that a new and better structure weald be raised to take the place of the building then burning. The attitude of the city was a great solace to the faculty ami the management of the college.

"Very little, of the equipment of the recitation rooms was saved. What little was got. out of the liulblluR was due to the earnest effort of the student body, the majority of whom worked courageously and continuously until it became positively dangerous to enter the building further. The following resolutions recently adopted at a meeting of the Research Club of Jackson have been placed on the desks of members of the legislature: Whereas, We are highly gratified to note the strong tendency manifested in both blanches of the Mississippi legislature towards the enactment of constructive legislation, and especially In the consideration of statutes for the betterment of moral and material conditions in our beloved state, and, Whereas, The members of the legis-. la! lire have in many ways shown their appreciation of suggestions offered by the various women's organizations of Mississippi, soliciting their views on matters of this character, and giving respeftful consideration; therefore, be it Resolved. By the Research club of the city of Jackson that we earnestly urge the members of our lawmaking body to give early and favorable consideration to the following measures now pending on the legislative calendar, viz: First The establishment of a juvenile reformatory or industrial school for wayward and defective children. Second The raising of the. age of consent as suggested by the legislative committee of the Mississippi Federation of Women's clubs.

Third The establishment of an Institution for the cara and treatment of feeble minded children. Fourth A statute authorizing the appointment of women as trustees on the boards of trustees of our educa tional nnd eleemosynary institutions. Fifth The enactment rf a statute that will render it possible to give full nnd adequate enforcement of our child labor laws. Sixth The passage of laws providing for a system of medical inspec-tii in our; public schools. Seventh Enactment of measures providing for the restoration of our beloved old; capitol building, and utilizing same for practical purposes of government.

Be it solved, further. That we feel confident, if the present legislature enacts Ho- above measures It will have achieved a volume of consti tu tive legislation never before equalled in the history lawmaking in this state, and we earnestly hope that each and every member will give serious consideration to the subjects above outlined.
