Retired prof essor Southall's forte is instruction, inspiration By Michael AnthonyStaff Writer "Now, this is why you teach," said Geneva Handy Southall, who retired in 1 992 after 22 years as professor of Afro-American and Caribbean Studies at the University of Minnesota. Seated in her home in south Minneapolis and surrounded by the mementos of a lifetime of teaching, concertizing and musical scholarship, she pulled an article from a scrapbook. It was a profile of Lester Monts, vice president of multicultural affairs at the University of Michigan. "While he was at the University of Minnesota," the article said, "he was greatly influenced by Dr. Geneva Southall." This is the sort of thing that makes an old teacher beam with satisfaction, and Southall has dozens of such tributes.

"Can you imagine? I now run into the sons and daughters of my former students," she said. A small, vital woman of 68 with close-cropped gray hair, she displays an earlier version of herself in a photograph taken with her first husband nearly 50 years ago. It's hardly recognizable, mostly because of the '40s-style long hair. "I had my Veronica Lake hairdo back then," she said, laughing. Though Southall has been tireless in her efforts to promote works by composers of African descent most notably pioneering two volumes on the life and times of Blind Tom, a slave pianist and composer of the 19th century if she were to sit down at the grand piano in piano in her Minneapolis home.

Mary Abbe Horrors! Power By Tim HarlowStaff Writer Open the door to pass out treats on Halloween night and you can expect to see Power Rangers, X-Men, Batman, Spiderman, Beavis and Butthead, and characters from the Flintstones and the Simpsons standing on your steps. Those are among this year's hottest-selling ready-made and sew- at-home costumes for kids, according to Caryl Svendsen-Deiches, a spokesperson for the Sewing Fashion Council, a New York firm that represents the American Home Sewing and Craft Association. "Whether you're talking about adult or children's costumes, the media It the catalyst that Influences what people are wearing," said Svendsen-Deiches, who recently surveyed more than 10,000 retail outlets nationwide to find out what's in for Halloween 1994. Characters from movies such as "The Lion King" and "Beauty and the Beast," along with cartoon favorites such as Garfield and the Peanuts Gang also will be popular among treat-seekers this year. In the galleries By Mary AbbeStaff Writer Ellsworth Kelly's single-color paintings, prints and sculptures appear so simple and direct that he could easily be dismissed as an artist whose glass is half empty.

Someone, that is, with little to say and an exceedingly limited vocabulary with which to say it. Any such assumptions are soundly countered by the lively, infinitely nuanced show of Kelly's work that opened this week at Walker Art Center. Spanning 35 years of his prolific career, the show Is a visual and Intellectual delight. It offers ample proof that Kelly's artistic glass Is brim full and overflowing. Working with Walker curatorial assistant Sir! Engberg, Kelly himself arranged the 60 works in two galleries, placing them with the same exquisite refinement that characterizes his art.
