Born May31, 1913. in Ishpeming, Michigan; died following complications from a stroke at Augustana Nursing Home, Minneapolis, November 14. 1998 Raised in Finnish American communities in Ishpeming. Ml; Brooklyn, NY; and Waukegan, IL, where her parents, the Rev. Alvar Rautalahti, DD and Mrs Thyra Hohenthal Rautalahti served Finnish Lutheran churches.

Served the Finnish American Lutheran Church, Suomi Synod, with her husband, the Rev. Raymond W. Wargelin, ThO in Berkeley, CA; Hancock, Ml; and Fairport Harbor, OH. After 1963 Lutheran Church merger, lived and worked in Minneapolis, MN; retired first to Rio Rancho, NM, later, Minneapolis. A graduate of Lake Forest College (BA, French) and Northwestern University (MA, English).

Further graduate studies. Chicago Conservatory of Music (organ) and University of Minnesota (library science). Began her church musician career as a nine year old, playing the organ for Finnish Lutheran Church services in Harlem in NYC. Organized Sunday Schools, church choirs, and orchestras while still a teenager in Waukegan. Following her 1939 marriage, became religious education director, choir director, and organist in Finnish Lutheran congregations in Berkeley.

Hancock, and Fairport Harbor. Commissioned Finnish American church music composers. With her husband, last Bishop of the Suomi Synod, member of Finnish hymn committee organized for the Lutheran Service Book and 1958; author, 'Finnish Favorite 1959. Her music collection now housed at immigration History Research Center. UMN.

Taught public school in Waukegan, Berkeley. Hancock. Bloomington (Annex) and Minneapolis (Minnehaha, Bryn Mawr, and Hamilton Member of the Finns and Finnish Americans Subcommittee, Ethnic Cultural Center, Department of Intergroup Education. Minneapolis Public Schools, 1973-75. Edited Finnish Lutheran children's weekly.

'The 1943-48, 55-62; edited Finnish cookbook in Berkeley and Scan-dinavian cookbook in Albuquerque. Organizer of church and community libraries. Life long volunteer: "Help Finland" speaker and Finnish Relief organizer, San Francisco Bay Area, 1939-40; Board of Directors, American Red Cross. Berkeley; League of Women Voters, OH, NM; president, AAUW, Houghton, Ml chapter; Store House, a free store for the indigent in Albu querque, 1976-92. Survived by her husband. Raymond W. Wargelin, Minneapolis; her children, Marianne Wargelin, Minneapolis. James Wargelin. St.

Paul; five grandchildren, Christopher and Maija Brown, Andrea, Jacob, and Ethan Wargelin; relatives in Finlan; her husband's relatives in the USA; the former Suomi Synod Pastors' families; friends in congregations and communities where she lived.
