MetroState PAGE B4 STAR TRIBUNE THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31 1998 Also noted State has 3rd highest health insurance coverage Guitar-store dies in car owner Pete Alenov crash on Hwy. 100 By', While Hawaii is considered by some to be a national model, officials cautioned that the situation was worsening. The islands' stagnant economy has added another 10,000 people to the ranks of the uninsured since 1989. "It has done better than the rest of the states in the mainland, but the population is held hostage by the economy," said Dr. Quentin Young, a Chicago internist and a coordinator with Physicians for a National Health Program.

Nationally, 10 million people have joined the uninsured since 1989 despite a strong economy. One study author said Hawaii was considered a model because of its QUEST program for the indigent and its Hawaii Prepaid Health Care Law, which mandates that employers cover health insurance for employees working at least 20 hours a week. Associated Press Nearly 91 percent of Minnesota residents have health insurance, the third-highest rate in the country, according to a study published Wednesday. Ranked first was Hawaii with 92.5 percent of residents having medical insurance in 1997, according to the American Journal of Public Health. That means just 7.5 percent, or about 89,000 residents, were uninsured.

Ranking just behind Hawaii were Wisconsin, with 408,000 uninsured equaling 8 percent of its population, and Minnesota, with 438,000 uninsured equaling 9.2 percent. In Minnesota, about 110,000 people are insured by Minne-sotaCare, the state's subsidized health insurance program for the working poor. Texas had the highest number of uninsured residents: more than 4.8 million, or nearly 25 percent of its population. Arizona had more than 1.1 million uninsured, which also is about 25 percent of its population, the study said. Arkansas' 639,000 uninsured equals more than 24 percent.

Anita Hoffman, 56, an activist and prankster who fell in love with Abbie Hoffman at first sight, helped him "levitate" the Pentagon and later kept him hidden for years from the FBI, died of breast cancer Sunday in San Francisco. She helped plot the most memorable pranks of the Yippie movement, including disrupting the New York Stock Exchange by throwing money on the trading floor, encircling the Pentagon in a protest against the Vietnam War and planning the demonstrations in Chicago during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Don Taylor, 78, an actor-director who played the role of Elizabeth Taylor's bridegroom in "Father of the Bride" and directed "The Island of Dr. Moreau," died of heart failure Tuesday in Los Angeles. He appeared in "Song of the Thin Man," "The Naked City" and "For the Love of Mary" before winning the role of Elizabeth Taylor's groom in "Father of the Bride" in 1950.

They were not related. He appeared in several more films, including "Stalag 17" and "I'll Cry Tomorrow," then turned to directing in the 1960s. He directed "Everything's Ducky," "Ride the Wild Surf," "Escape from the Planet of the Apes," "Damien: Omen II" and "The Final Countdown," among others. The last time he saw Alenov was at a concert by Cheap Trick and Flipp at First Avenue in Minneapolis in November, when he came to hang out with Aerosmith band members and see the bands perform. "When he sold a guitar he was selling something he loved.

That's what he was about," Arens said. Peter Wagener of the La Vonne music shop said Alenov was an innovator. He started a vintage-guitar shop when there were few in the country, Wagener said. He said Alenov got his rock-star clientele by contacting promoters and letting them know he was in business and had guitars for sale. Alenov is survived by a brother, Nikolai, and sisters Vera and Nadia, all of the Twin Cities area.

A candlelight vigil will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the Holcomb-Henry-Boom Funeral Home, 536 N. St. Paul. Services will be held at 10 a.m.

Saturday at St. Panteleimon Orthodox Church, 2210 Franklin Av. Minneapolis. By Lucy Y. Her Star Tribune Staff Writer Pete Alenov left a mark on the music industry with his vintage-guitar store.

The St. Paul resident died Wednesday morning in a one-car accident on Hwy. 100 near the Minnetonka Boulevard exit in St. Louis Park. He was 45.

Alenov, who owned Pete's Guitar in St. Paul and provided guitars for musicians such as ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards and Eric Clapton, was southbound on Hwy. 100 about 3:15 a.m. Wednesday when he crashed into a tree, according to a police report. The Hennepin County medical examiner's office and the State Patrol are investigating the crash.

Flipp singer Brynn Arens said Alenov's death is a big loss. "He helped a lot of guitar players around the world," he said. "As a guitar collector, he was one of the best in the world. The Twin Cities has just lost its musical landmark." Arens said he bought his first guitar from Alenov 10 years ago. Prices generally ranged from $500 Alenov sold guitars to Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney.

Obituaries to $5,000. Paul McCartney once paid $10,000 for a left-handed 1959 Les Paul guitar. Alenov started a guitar-repair store in 1969, and later changed Pete's Guitar from a full-service guitar store to a by-appointment-only dealership, with repairs limited to instruments bought there. "Anyone who appreciated the art of guitar knew who Pete was," Arens said.
