General manager Dan Mellon said the change is mainly for "branding" making the station more clearly identifiable in TV's multichannel jumble. But it also distances the station from its past.

Channel 23 had been KLGT since 1992, when Sonlight Broadcasting a local company whose stockholders included former KARE-TV, Channel 1 1 general manager Linda Rios Brook bought bankrupt KTMA. KLGT initially was touted as a Christian station, although the designation was more about attitude than orthodoxy. The owners envisioned a lineup of upbeat, family-oriented programs similar to what the national Pax Net now offers. But the hard realities of attracting enough viewers to pay the bills eventually led to cop-show reruns, "The Jerry Springer Show" and affiliation with the WB, a general-interest network whose prime-time shows range from the inspirational "7th Heaven" to the hormonal "Dawson's Creek." The Baltimore-based Sinclair Broadcasting Group bought KLGT a year ago. A change of call letters was overdue.

But the reality is that John Bulajic, the Dick Clark of this cable-access "Bandstand" for seniors, hasn't been able to tape a new episode in weeks. It's all reruns on MCN. For eight years, Bulajic produced "Polka Time" at Northwest Community TV in Brooklyn Park. Even after he moved to Excelsior, Northwest exempted his show from its residency requirements.

But Northwest's board recently voted to drop grandfathered shows like Bulajic's because of increased demand for time slots. Bulajic is at wit's end. He said only Northwest has a studio big enough to accommodate the 70 to 80 people who show up to dance whenever he tapes. MCN's Gaye Jacobson said "Polka Time" is one of the regional cable channel's most popular shows, especially with older viewers. But MCN is basically a clearing house for cable-access shows from all over the Twin Cities area.
