Wednesday, March 12, 1997 The Greenville News Carolina wsl defendin By Mike Hembree Staff Writer SIMPSONVILLE The Carolina Lady Trojans were in the zone in more ways than one Tuesday night. Class AA Upstate title game at Hill-crest High. Undefeated Carolina, now 28-0, advances to Saturday's state championship game at Carolina Coliseum. Columbia defeated the Trojans in last year's final. Katrina Neal scored 18 and had key points, in every quarter, and Rachel Sloan added nine for Carolina.

Columbia's Teresa Geter, a 6-foot-2 all-star who often domi- nates games, had 19 points and blocked several shots, but Carolina's zone kept her from running free on offense. "This team has been a baseline-to-baseline, pressing defensive team all year," said Carolina Coach Betty Moore. "They're all over the floor. But we felt like to counter their size we had to play zone. I don't believe our girls were confident going in with that because we've only used it here and there.

"But I really believed if we could stay close, we could pull it out. We haven't had to talk about this game a lot. The team has been incredible getting ready for it." The game was close throughout, but Columbia held its last lead at 20-19 with 55 seconds left in the first half. Carolina broke a 32-32 tie with 0.9 of a second left in the third quarter and led the rest of the way. Free throws were critical for the Trojans in the second half.

They made only one of six attempts in the first two quarters but responded with 12 of 18 in the second half. "At halftime, I didn't mention that we had made only one of six," Moore said. "But I did say when we got to the line that we had to knock them in, that it could be the difference in the game." Eight of Carolina's 12 third-quarter points came at the line, and the Trojans hit four of six in the fourth period. Neal made three of four free throws in the final 15 seconds to seal the win, following a Michella Jackson layup that had given the Trojans a 44-40 lead. Geter missed the first half of the final quarter because of foul trouble 1 and scored only one basket and twq, free throws in the period.

I COLUMBIA (42): Brabham 2, Davis 2, English Teresa Geter 1 9, Jett 8, Murry 6. CAROLINA (47): Maxwell 4, Garnett 2, Katrina Neal 18. Jackson 6, Sloan 9, Scott 8. Half: Carolina 21 -20. Central 1 1 Andrew Jackson 2 Mauldin girls in AAAA finals I s. 1 'w -s- I "The difference tonight probably' was Shirley. She hit two really big shots," said Mauldin coach Julie Wilson. "She stays calm and never" gets rattled. When we need a shot, -J-she's willing to take it.

"Then (senior point guard) Tracy (Woody) scored a 3-point play rightJ after that (pushing the lead with 4:35 left. That was an- other big play. That's been the sto; ry of the second half our the season. It might be someone differ- ent each time, but somebody comes -J through with a big play when we need it. Tonight, Amanda (Brooks) and Sonya (Woods) didn't score a -lot, but they kept Byrnes from 1 dominating the boards; if they hadn't rebounded like they did, we'd have been in trouble.

Mauldin stayed out of trouble by .7 sinking 11 of 14 free throws in the last .4:03. That earned a long-awaited berth in the title game. "These girls have wanted to go to Columbia the last two years, and have just missed out. Last year we beat Greenwood in the region, but we wound up watching in the title game in Columbia and there was Greenwood, winning it all," said Wilson. "This year, more than any- thing, these girls wanted the chance to play there." i Andrea O'Shaughnessey added 13 points and Woody 10, giving Lady Mavericks 47 points from three perimeter starters.

i Ashleigh Fuller scored 19 points and Porsche Bennett 15 to lead Byrnes. BYRNES (55): Thompson 5, Moore 6, Porsche Bennett 1 5, McClintock 2, Miller 6, Ashleigh Fuller 1 9, By Abe Hardesty Staff Writer MAULDIN Byrnes had the momentum when Natale Thompson sank a short jumper at the outset of the fourth quarter of Tuesday's AAAA girls Upstate championship game. But Shirley Hill had the confidence. wnen we were warming up, I knew I'd be on," Hill said after leading Mauldin to a 65-55 victory over the persistent Lady Rebels. "I had a lot of confidence in my shot tonight.

Those two (3-pointers, early in the fourth quarter), when they left my hand, I knew they were going in." Hill's calm 24-point performance included four 3-pointers, but the most pivotal came early in the fourth quarter. Mauldin, after leading 36-21 early in the third quarter, suffered fading confidence as the lead melted to 40-37. Hill's long 3-pointer stung the Rebels with 7:06 to play, giving Mauldin a 43-37 lead. Another long, high, 3-pointer with 5:49 to play seemed to restore Mauldin's adrenalin while hiking the lead to 48-39. "Those were backbreakers," said Byrnes coach Shirley McAdams, whose team fell to 19-7, with three defeats coming against the Lady Mavericks.

"Our girls were playing hard and playing with confidence, and those shots hurt us. The victory sends Mauldin, 25-4, into Friday's state championship game against Lower Richland.
