Boston Jim Leyritz was told this week that he will not be doing much, if any, catching for the Red Sox this season. He will be the designated hitter against lefthanded pitchers and get assorted at-bats as an outfielder and first baseman. "I'm completely dumbfounded by the whole thing," he said Saturday before Boston's spring finale, a 10-5 victory over the Twins. "I thought I was coming in to get ready for April 1.

But I guess they still consider me a 19-year-old rookie and I've got to win a job." Leyritz, who is with his third team in 18 months, didn't ask the Red Sox to trade him. But he made it clear that that's what he wants if that's what it takes to get more playing time. "There's probably still a few teams out there that think I can catch," he said. Atlanta Atlanta manager Bobby Cox said that shortstop Walt Weiss not outfielder Andruw Jones will likely lead off when the season opens Tuesday against Milwaukee. The 20-year-old Jones has spent most of spring training trying to master the top spot in the batting order. But lie has failed miserably, hitting only .200 while striking out 23 times in 65 at-bats.

Weiss, a free-agent signee from Colorado who was expected to bat eighth, has led off in four consecutive exhibition games. He handled the position perfectly in two at-bats against Cleveland, walking twice and scoring Atlanta's first run on Chipper Jones' three-run homer. "It doesn't change a whole lot for me," Weiss said. "I'm just trying to get on base. I look at it as a challenge." Associated Press Lee Smith, who holds the major league record for saves with 478, has left the Kansas City Royals camp after getting caught up in a numbers crunch and refusing a Class AAA assignment.

Royals manager Tony Muser had wanted to keep Smith, who was making a comeback after announcing his retirement from Montreal in July. But in Jim Pitts-ley and Brian Bevil, the Royals have two younger relievers who are out of options. They would have to be exposed to the waiver wire before the Royals could send them to the minors. Muser asked Smith on Friday if he would accept assignment to Triple-A Omaha. Smith cleaned out his locker Friday night and did not report to practice Saturday.

Muser was not aware on Saturday that Smith had decided to leave. Smith, 40, compiled his save record with eight different teams, establishing himself as a closer At Lakeland, Fla. with the Chicago Cubs from 1980-1987. Smith was 0-0 with no saves and a 7.45 ERA in nine spring training games with Kansas City. N.Y Yankees George Steinbrenner said he may have "overstayed his time" as owner of the Yankees, in a interview to be televised today. Steinbrenner, in an interview with Harry Smith of "CBS News Sunday Morning," also said he had not ruled out the possibility of the Yankees moving out of New York. The interview was taped March 15, shortly before rumors surfaced that the team was for sale.

On his stay with the Yankees, Steinbrenner said: "I think 25 years is longer than anybody has owned the Yankees. Maybe that's long enough. I have always felt that in business, a good thing is that nobody should stay as CEO of God I'm alive," Tate said in court Friday. The police officer who arrested Cardenas said the former baseball star told him: "Tate should be glad I didn't have a gun or he would've been dead." Cardenas' attorney, Edward Kathman, described his client as a model citizen who made a bad decision during a difficult time in his marriage. But Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Thomas Nurre said Cardenas' personal problems did not justify his assault on Tate.

Cardenas, 59, pleaded guilty last month to a charge that he beat Orenthal Tate, 27, while he sat with Cardenas' wife, Lois, in a parked car Nov. 18. Tate, who works with Cardenas' wife, said the two were talking and eating lunch when Cardenas smashed his car window with the bat.

Tate said Cardenas followed him to the suburban Blue Ash police station and attacked him again, breaking his arm. "I'm just here today to thank APR OAC 0 Avail.
