4 Sunday, March 16, 1997 The Greenville News 12C CLEMSON vs. TULSA CLEMSON FROM PAGE 1c GOOD NEWS and 64.9 on free throws but that's OK for a team which averages 15 offensive rebounds. "I give him the green light," coach Steve Robinson said. The 6-foot-5 Seals reminds Clemson coach Rick Barnes of Duke's Trajan Langdon, who burned the Tigers with 25 and 34 points (two of the three biggest individual scores against Clemson this year). "He's a very streaky player," Clemson's Terrell Mclntyre said.

"He can do a lot of things. We'll have to be prepared to help whoev-er's guarding him." Tulsa's offense reminds Clemson of North Carolina's not surprising, since Robinson is a coaching descendant of Dean Smith, having played eight games against the nation's Top 50 scorers and have not allowed any of them to get their average points. The 6-foot-5 Seals averages 21.2 points, more than anyone Clemson has faced except S.C. State's Moo Moo Blakney, 23.4. The only higher scorer remaining in the NCAA tournament is Utah's Keith Van Horn, 22.2.

Shea isn't gun-shy. In an average game, he takes 17 shots, eight of them 3-pointers. He is not a great percentage shooter 39.8 percent from the floor, 30.9 on threes, v. worked as an assistant at Kansas under Roy Williams. In its last eight victories, Tulsa has averaged 89 points.

Clemson will try to control the tempo on defense while remaining aggressive on offense, Barnes said. The winners of Sunday's Clem-son-Tulsa and Temple-Minnesota games will meet Thursday in San Antonio. NOTES: Barnes said he will stay with Harold Jamison as Clemson's starting center because Tulsa is such a physical team. Tulsa has a 6-11 center, Rafael Maldonado, and 6-8 Michael Ruffin averages 10.2 rebounds second only to Tim Duncan among players remaining in the tournament. Most of the Tulsa players were recruited by Tubby Smith, who moved from Tulsa to Georgia in 1995 and beat Clemson in the 1996 NCAA West Regional.

With Tennessee-Chattanooga and Minnesota joining Clemson in Sunday's second-round games, three of the eight teams from Puerto Rico are among the final 24 intheNCAAs. If Clemson wins Sunday, the team will go directly to San Antonio rather than returning to school, which is closed this week for spring break. Asked how his players were enjoying the trip, Barnes said, "It's either Kansas City or Clemson. And right now, they don't want to go back to Clemson." "The only thing we kept saying to each other was we have to play hard and we have to play smart," said Sloan, a senior forward who started in the last two state title games. "That's all we kept saying. A lot of times we were like 'This is it, we've got to do And we did it Sloan scored 23 points, Krystal Scott had 20 and Neal 19 for Carolina, which put the finishing touches on a perfect season in which it won all 29 of its games.

"In the second half, when they missed a shot, they just got it and put it back up. They beat us badly on the boards. Missed foul shots and rebounding cost us the championship." Griffin and company did all they could to keep their playoff string of wins going. The 6-foot-3 senior scored 13 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter, including two 3-pointers 16 seconds apart to pull Greenville to 53-49 with 3:02 left.

Forward Will Bouton sank two free throws with 2:43 left to make it 53-51 and get the Red Raiders contingent seated up high in the stands roaring. "I got open from the perimeter and I was hitting the shot when I was open," Griffin said. "They played me really tight tonight and we really couldn't execute the offense and I really couldn't get open. They were trapping us the whole game and we struggled with it the whole game." Bulldogs guard Ricardo Williams (game-high 27 points) put in his own miss with 2:17 to go and Ter-renthial White scored on a follow of a missed free throw with 1:49 left for a 57-51 lead. Greenville (22-6), which also got 15 points from Marcus Leamon, pulled back to four with two free throws from Griffin, but Charles White's layin with 52.9 seconds left pushed the lead back to six at 59-53.

The Bulldogs (29-3) added 3 free throws for a 62-53 lead and were on their way to another title. "I'm never happy with a loss," Griffin said, "but our team played hard all season but just fell short one game." Griffin got some advice from Shammond Williams during the course of the game about using pump-fakes when he shot. Williams, who said he has played with many of the Red Raiders players around town drove to Columbia after helping the Tar Heels beat Colorado in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C. Griffin scored 12 first-half points as the Red Raiders went to the locker room trailing 29-27. He was held scoreless in the third quarter.

"We just wanted to get him frustrated and I think we did," Holly Hill-Roberts coach Willie Thomas said. "He committed fouls, they didn't call it." "They started double-teaming him and I think he got a little tired," Johnson said. "He had to go quite a long time tonight. He made some key baskets at the end, but he was just dead tired. That's why a lot of his shots weren't falling." Terrenthial White and Williams had 9 rebounds each and Charles White had 8.

"(White) got a lot of offensive boards and put them back in," Thomas said. "He really carried us when we weren't doing much." But not before Hampton, which was making its first appearance in a girls title game, showed it had some fight in it. Carolina stormed out to a 12-0 lead, before the Red Devils (25-7) made a spurt of their own to pull to 18-16 after a 3-pointer from Melissa Myers, who scored a team-high 18 points. "We thought they may have answered our call," said Neal, "and we had to step it up a little bit." With the score 22-18 early in the second quarter, Carolina went on a 13-0 run in less than four minutes to open a 17-point lead.

Six of the points came in a span of 17 seconds as Carolina's pressure defense led to Hampton turn-, overs, which led to quick and easy baskets. Neal banked in a shot to make it 31-18 and that was followed by a jumper from Sloan and a steal and layin from LaShonda Maxwell for a 35-18 advantage. In its Upstate championship win against defending champion Columbia, Carolina played zone defense and didn't extend its defense beyond midcourt. Saturday, the Trojans employed a 2-2-1 press and went back to the full court pressure and man-to-man defense that is their style. "It's tough, isn't it? Moore said of the press.

"Against a team that wants to run the ball and push the ball up the floor like (Hampton), you want to take away their strengths." The Trojans extended a 15-point halftime lead by scoring 9 of the first 11 points of the second half to take a 52-30 lead with 4:46 left in the third quarter. They hardly let up, outscoring Hampton 22-5 in the final quarter "This is the first time they have ever been pushed to this level and I guess with the crowd and but we thought we were in it to win it," said Hampton coach Cassandra Bolden, who lost her starting point guard Daphne Grant to injury in a playoff game against Calhoun County. "The same thing that got us behind at first got us behind again turnovers." Moore said following her team's second game against Appalachian region rival Chapman, a Feb. 14 game in which the Trojans trailed by seven at halftime, she chal i Big remodeling expenses coming up?
