greenvilleonline.com SB Sunday, June 2, 2002 The Greenville News Plane crash attributed to mechanical failure GOP FROM PAGE 1B said, although there is no issue in this election cycle to drive Christian conservatives the way gambling did in 1994, 1998 and 2000. Peeler's campaign mailed 150,000 oversize postcards late last week to a target list of multiple voters and Christian conservatives. On Friday in Greenville, he unveiled a program to bolster faith-based organizations and strengthen families. The mailing cites Peeler's "re cord of pro-family accomplishment," backing of the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act, opposition to the lottery and video poker, and support for abstinence-based sex education. During his remarks, Peeler drew applause when he said that as governor he "will welcome prayer back into the public schools where it belongs." There were murmured "amens" to references to gambling as poor public policy.

whether the plane climbs or dives, the federal agency said. The pilot, Gideon Heatwole, 19, of Olar, and Jerold "Jerry" Groff, 25, of Bamberg, died when their small plane, owned by a relative of Heatwole, crashed in a field near the Bamberg-Barnwell County line on May 17, Coroner Willard Duncan said. The Associated Press ORANGEBURG Mechanical failure caused the crash of a small plane in Bamberg County that killed two people last month, the National Transportation Safety Board says. A cable was separated from the rod used to lift or lower the elevator, which determines Secretary of State Jim Miles was campaigning in the Low-country and state Sea Bill Bran-ton of Summerville did not attend the event sponsored by the Spartanburg County GOP. Earlier Saturday, Peeler campaigned in Tigerville at North Greenville College where he pitched family values to approximately 50 supporters in the Hayes Ministry Center.

Peeler is among those wooing the Upstate's Christian conservative vote. How energized that segment of the electorate is remains unclear. With the fading of the Christian Coalition no organization has moved to fill the void and many Christian conservatives have become GOP regulars. Arnold Emory, a NGC board member, said that "Christian conservatives are still out there, but maybe in a different light" with video poker eliminated and the anti-lottery battle lost. Candidates are pushing their own values and personalities, he THE ONLY ONE PIECE SYSTEM ON THE MARKET! Races Gee Condon pushed his plan to end the property tax through reorganization of state and local governments and "a slight" increase of the sales tax by up to 2 percent.

"You're renting your property now from the government and we need to end that tax in South Carolina," he said. Peeler sounded a variety of campaign themes, stressing "education reform that works, with accountability and choice." Former U.S. Rep. Mark San-ford of Sullivans Island said his plan to end the state's income tax over 18 years, primarily through reordered spending priorities and government reorganization to eliminate waste and duplication, would remake South Carolina in terms of personal income and individual wealth. Party activist Rebekah Sutherland called for ending "the compulsory school law (and) give parents school choice." Both universities and two others had offered her full scholarships. William Laser, Clemson's National Scholars program director, said Clemson is competing against scholarship programs at other universities that are older and have had time to build a reputation and gain popularity. "Those who chose not to come to Clemson accepted scholarships at Duke, Cornell, Georgia Tech and UVA. That's pretty good company," Lasser said. He said Clemson's program is building momentum toward similar status.

"Our goal is to really tailor the educational opportunities for each student. Our focus on an ongoing basis is to challenge them to excel and support them as they do that," Lasser said. National scholars are offered specialized courses, research and internship opportunities and experiences like travel and personal access to top scholars and leaders on and off campus, he said. In addition to Cheung, other national scholars coming to Clemson as freshmen this fall are Matt Baker of Irmo, chemical engineering; Matt Clemmens of Aiken, chemical engineering; Brian Eyink, St. Louis, engineering; Jamie Kearns of Jakarta, Indonesia, chemical engineeringpre-med; and Ahmed Mohiuddin of Columbia, electrical engineering.

Cheung, three other South Carolinians, a Missourian and a Charleston native living in Indonesia will make up Clemson's third class of National Scholars this fall. Korman and Ambika Bumb, valedictorian at Southside, chose universities outside of South Carolina. All three said they made tough decisions between many generous scholarship offers at top schools. Finances and the friendliness of Clemson's campus were the tiebreaker for Cheung, who had a 1470 SAT and a weighted grade point average of 4.8-4.9.

"It was pretty close to home and was definitely the best offer financially," said Cheung, who chose Clemson over eight other schools. "I got a full tuition scholarship offer from Vanderbilt, but Clemson was a completely full ride. Also, it seemed like Clemson had a really personal feeling, and I felt like the campus provided a good family environment. It was easy to talk to all the people." Bumb, a 17-year-old native of India with a 1530 on her SAT, said she chose Georgia Tech because of its highly ranked biomedical engineering program, a 0 (Z)(Z)9l Reg. 299'5 We'll Make Your Old Silver Beautiful Again!
