WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1943 Ralph Barr Writes Consensus Of People In Bombay, India THEiEVENING HURONTTE. HURON. 'S. P. PAGE THREE A feeling that the war might not last as long as first anticipated was expressed, in a letter received this week by Richard M.

Barr, Hotel Marvin Huron, from his son, Ralph Barr, who is in Bombay, India. His letter said in part: "These past few days seem to indicate the tide is turning strongly in our favor and I dc.i't feel that Italy will hold out much longer. The Russians, done, a great deal and the pressure on Germany increases from day to day. I know several people here who are betting it will end this year and while I ani quite ready to hope they are right-I don't quite see how it can be that soon. Nevertheless I am convinced it is not going to be as long a drawn out war as we thought only a short year ago.

"With the appointment of a new commander-in-chief for this part of the world popular opinion and the press notices can lead one to believe there may be greater activity out here and perhaps a campaign in Burma may be the outcome but no one can'tell where they propose to strike at the Japs next. "Still no likelihood ot my getting away from here until some very vague time in the future. As with everything else it hangs on the war --and nobody knows much about that." Mr. Barr, who is now general manager of the Standard Oil Company of India, has resided in India for about 26 years. In 1940, after war broke out in Europe, Mrs.

Barr -and their son; Ralph, returned to the United States and home on Long Island in New York. 20--OT--. L'angdon C. Merchant, head proofreader for the State, morning newspaper here, had a collection of ribbons and cash prizes as proof that the baking competition at the state fair is not exclusively woman's. It was three years ago that Merchant decided he would try his hand in this hitherto all-woman contest; Cakes he' baked took two. blue ribbons.

Last year he won three blue ribbons. Merchant-baked cakes in event were awarded three blue ribbons and a red ribbon, a best- award. Merchant was the only male contestant. He estimated that on an $8 outlay he would get a profit of $18 "and," with a nod toward his feminine competitors, "envy." Harvest Mutton In "Timber Area WENATCHEE, WASH. --UP)-North-central Washington has harvested its; annual meat crop from the national forests that lie in the of the Cascade range.

Although'referred to by residents as' another of Washington's "timber crops," the harvest actually is one of mutton on the hoof. Each spring, approximately 29,000 ewes are hauled by truck from feeding grounds for summer grazing in the Wenatchee and Che- Ian national forests. They yield a lamb crop of 31,000 head. The harvest 'comes with a minimum of loss--only about 600 lambs being missed each year in each of the two forests due to coyotes, cougars, bears, poisonous plants and straying.
