PAGE B6 STAR TRIBUNE Obituaries WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 1996 96 Virginia Strong, last child of Honeywell pioneer, dies at 95 Virginia Sweatt Strong, 95, the last surviving child of the man who guided Honeywell Inc. to worldwide prominence and who mixed with some of the country's most famous and wealthy families, died of complications from a stroke Sunday at her home in Wayzata. "She was a courageous lady who was so capable and responsible to her friends and family," said her niece, Mrs. A. Lockland Reed.

"She bore up to a lot of tragedies and she never complained. 5. 1996. Ermine was a concert contralto referred to by critics as 'The Vest Pocket Marion Anderson. She was a diminutive four feet, nine inches tall. Born and raised in St.

Paul, Ermine began her career as a singer at 16 as a soloist in Pilgrim Baptist Church, St. Paul. She had a deep, clear contralto's voice. She was the first AfroAmerican to appear with the St. Paul Civic Opera.

Ermine was an active member of the Artist Section of the St. Paul Schubert Club. She appeared in concerts at Northrup Auditorium and traveled throughout the United States giving concerts of spirituals. Her renditions captivated audiences with her interpretations of traditional songs which spring from slavery. She campaigned musically to have spirituals restored to their original dignity.

Ermine graduated from Hill Elementary School, Central High School, and the Minnesota College of Music, with further study at the Macalester College Conservatory of Music. She was soloist for Pilgrim Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, St. Phillip's Episcopal Church. Christ Episcopal Church, and St. John's Episcopal Church.

She is a former member of the Hallie Q. Brown Board of Directors, Credjatawn Social Club. Twin City Forty Club, and the Golden Agers Club. She IS preceded in death by her mother. Harriet Grissom Hall; father, S.

Edward Hall, a wellknown St. Paul civic pioneer: and husband. Theodore Ted Allen, popular Twin Cities insurance broker. Ermine iS survived by daughters, Myrrhene Crawford of Mpls and Marcheta Allen Mines of Oakland, CA: her sister. Dorothy McFarland of St.

Gross, 78, president and chairman of Gross-Given Manufacturing Co. who oversaw its explosive growth from a sheetmetal shop to an international vending company, died of cancer Saturday at Rosewood Estate in St. He was born in St. Paul, where he graduated from Central High School. In 1938 he graduated from what is now the University of St.

Thomas. His father, Arthur, and his uncle, Harry Given, founded GrossGiven Manufacturing Co. in St. Paul in 1935. Gross joined the sheet-metal job shop in 1942.

The company made its first vending machines in 1949, and was making candy vending machines by the 1960s. Her kind and generous nature made her a favorite auntie to her many nieces and nephews, and Lil never missed a family wedding or shower. She was talented in many areas cooking, entertaining, painting, and grandchild-spoiling to name a few. Lil dearly loved her grandchildren and cherished the time she spent with them.

She leaves us all with a lifetime of wonderful memories of a woman who was truly a gracious and elegant lady to the very end. Lil had a strong faith in God that sustained her through her illness and she is now at peace with the Lord. Mass of Christian Burial Wed. 11:30 a.m. at St.

He was joined by his brother-in-law, Jack Edgerton, in 1991 as co-chairman. Although Gross wasn't active in the day-to-day running of the business at the time of his death, he had liked to drop by and held his seat on the board. During Gross' 50-plus years with the company, he saw it become an international company that employs 250 people in St.

Paul and 150 people in Philadelphia and sells its products in about 30 countries. He set up a $1 million scholarship fund for children of his employees. Gross was a member of Kiwa- of Kiwa- nis International, the St. Paul Curling Club and the White 1 Bear Yacht Club. He was a member of the board of directors for Norwest Bank in wife, His first Jean Sanborn, died in 1983.

He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Delores; two sons John, of North Oaks, and Richard, of Afton; daughter, Jennifer, of St. Paul; sister, Virginia Edgerton, of Mendota Heights, and five grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, Kent and Portland St.

Rae held a number of leadership positions including President, Minneapolis Legal Secretaries Association, 1967- 68. In 1970 she was named Legal Secretary of the Year in Minneapolis. In 1976-77, when living in San Francisco, Rae was president of the San Francisco Legal Secretaries Association.

Rae's unmatched Irish wit, gracious hostessing, keen intellect, and grand sense of fun are just a few of her special gifts.
