I 4C Wkdnksday, January 22, 1997 The Greenville News Boys Basketball Girls Basketball (Sir GnviiiG win Mauldin, Berea Mann, Christ Church, Wade Hampton win beaten in Peach Blossom AAA play at 5-0. Greer fell to 2-2 in the region, 11-6 overall. The Yellow Jackets, who rallied from an eight-point deficit with 4:25 remaining to get to 68-67 on Rod Gilliam's running jumper in the lane with 20 seconds to play, set up a pick play on the final inbounds pass that instead was picked-off. "I don't think they really knew what I wanted them to do and that's my fault," Greer coach Jeff Neely said. "I don't think I had them really well-prepared for that last shot." GREENVILLE (70): Cedric Cureton 13, McCombs 5, Gambrell 2, James Griffin 27, Marcus Leamon 14, Bouton 9. Halftime: Greer, 34-26. By Marc Weiszer Staff Writer Greenville remained at arm's length from its Peach Blossom AAA pursuers Tuesday night thanks to the rather lengthy arms of 6-foot-6 Kendrick Gambrell. With Greenville clinging to a one-point lead and six seconds remaining on the clock, second-place Greer got the ball under the Red Raiders basket with a chance to set up a game-winning play and move within a half game of first place in the region. Gambrell made sure the Yellow Jackets never got a shot off, deflecting the inbounds pass from Alex Downs and Marcus Leamon of Greenville came down with it.

Leamon heaved the ball high in the air down-court to a waiting Will Bouton, who laid it in as the buzzer sounded and Greenville celebrated a 70-67 win at Greenville's Slick Moore Gym. "If they got the ball in under the basket, you know they were going to beat us," Greenville coach Bill Johnson said. "What we had to do was force them to throw the ball over our heads and hopefully try to get a hand on the ball and we did." "He wanted me on the ball seriously," Gambrell said of Johnson's instructions during a timeout before the play. "Don't give them no points, no basket at all."
