Smith III Charlotte Bureau CHARLOTTE In between the Charlotte Hornets Honeybees donning boxing gloves and the crowd booing Reggie Miller, a good basketball game broke out in the Charlotte Coliseum Friday night. While the sellout crowd of 24,042 came to the game between the Hornets and Indiana Pacers hoping to see the home team exact revenge for Miller's cheap shot that decked Charlotte center Vlade Di-vac in a game between the teams one week ago, nothing like that happened. Instead, the Hornets chose to get even with the Pacers by claiming a 96-89 victory. "It was a key for us to come out big tonight," said Charlotte center Matt Geiger. "They had beat us pretty bad (a week ago).

A lot of the media hyped the game, but we just wanted to win." The win, which improved Charlotte's record to 47-26, didn't come without drama. The Hornets, who trailed by as many as 17 in the second quarter, rebounded to pull within nine at the half (56-49). Charlotte continued to chip away in the third period, behind the play of point guard David Wesley, center Matt Geiger and forward Glen Rice. The Hornets outscoring the Pacers 23-10 during the first nine minutes to claim a 72-66 advantage. Although Charlotte never managed to completly shake the Pacers, it led for all but 45 seconds the rest of the way.

The Hornets turned the tide with excellent defense. After receiving what appeared to be a never-ending supply of open shots in the first two periods, virtually everything the Pacers attempted was challenged. Due to Charlotte's defensive ef fort, the Pacers connected on a meager 36.9 percent (31 of 84) of their field goal attempts. They were even worse in the second half, making only 24.3 of their attempts. Although Miller finished with 19, he made only five of 14 field goals.

His backcourt mate, Mark Jackson failed to score, missing each of his 11 attempts. He was inaccurate on all of his five second half attempts. "I think the third quarter was the big turnaround in the ballgame," said Pacers forward Dale Davis, a former Clemson standout. "We were up nine at halftime and we sat back and allowed the Hornets to get back into the game." For the second consecutive night the Hornets had three players finish with doubledoubles. Anthony Mason had 18 points and 13 rebounds, Geiger scored 15 and grabbed 10 boards and Divac contributed 22 points and 11 rebounds.

In addition, Wesley dished out a career-high 15 assists and Rice had 20 points. While the game was far from the brawl that some fans may have anticipated, it did have its moments. Divac and Davis had a third quarter shoving match that resulted in double technicals and Mason had a couple of teeth knocked out, thanks to Indiana forward Derrick McKey. Charlotte head coach Dave Cow-ens also got into the act, getting ejected from the game by referee Joe Crawford with 2:36 to play in the fourth quarter after being hit with his second technical of the game. It marked his first ejection as an NBA head coach.

"I go back a long way with Joe Crawford as a player," said Cowens. "He's been around a long time. He's one of our best referees in the league. But, if you happen to get on the bad side of him on a particular night, he doesn't hesitate to throw Staff Reports Carolina's Krystal Scott was named state AA girls player of the year in conjunction with the S.C. Technicals-Nuggets illegal defense 2. A-1 9,911 By Chris McMahon Staff Writer Hiram Springle has taken great strides in introducing soccer to Greenville's inner-city and today he will accept one of his biggest challenges as Soccer In The Streets national program makes its debut at Southside High School. Soccer In The Streets is an Atlanta-based nationwide non-profit agency that develops soccer, educational and life-skills programs for children in public housing and low income communities. "It offers kids an opportunity to get involved in a non-traditional sport," said Springle. "They will have a chance to work with people in an environment where they are learning teamwork, team skills and some things that that can take far beyond soccer." Springle has been involved in soccer for a dozen years and is the driving force of the inner-city program that has touched more than 100 kids in Greenville the past two years.

His target areas include Jesse Jackson Town-homes, Piedmont Manor, West-view Homes, Oakview Homes, Highland Square and Fleetwood Manor. Greenville was one of 13 cities selected this year for Soccer In The Streets. Overall, 55 cities in the United States have been awarded chapters in eight-year 1 i Sonics 71 S.C.
