Sunday. Dkcemhkr 10. 1995 Tin-: Cki il.i.k Ni.ws Jasper County's Singleton leads South to victory GC North South By Alan Blondin Sl'KCIAL COKRKSI'ONDliNT MYRTLE BEACH John Singleton of Jasper County School arrived late for the week of preparation for the 48th annual brought the series record in the South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association North-South All- Star Football Game to 24-22-2 in favor of the North. Defensive back Damon White of Spring Valley intercepted two passes and was the South's Defensive MVP. Mickey Gist of Dor-man had four receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown and was the North's Offensive MVP, and Sam-mie Roach of Aiken, who recorded five tackles and a sack, was the North's Defensive MVP.

The North trailed 20-9 entering the fourth quarter, but got a 36-yard field goal from Ryan Burns of Greer, The North added a seven-yard touchdown pass from Al Hunt of Belton-Honea Path to JJ. Johnson of Daniel with 1:38 to play. Because of a missed extra point in the first half, the North was forced to go for a two-point conversion to tie, but a pass fell incomplete. Sumter's Sieve Gantt put the game away for the South on the ensuing onside kick. He leaped to snare the kick on a high hop, cut right to avoid a tackle and raced 48 yards for a touchdown that put the South ahead 26-18 with 1:32 left.

"(The coaches) told me to catch the ball and fall," said Gantt. "I saw an open space in front of nie and just look off running." The North, which was held to 55 yards rushing on 27 carries, was stopped on four plays on its final drive and the South ran out the clock. Hunt didn't start at quarterback, but he sparked the North offense and finished 8 of 13 for 150 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He scrambled out of two potential sacks late in the second quarter to complete consecutive passes, the second of which was a 25-yard TD toss to Gist. Hunt drove the North deep into South territory from his own 28 late in the third quarter, but the drive ended with an interception.

Hunt carried on consecutive plays for 28 yards to the South 22 midway through the fourth period, but he was shaken up on a sack and temporarily forced out of the game. Two plays later, Dexter Terrell of Berea was intercepted at the South 8. On the North's next possession, Hunt completed passes of 38 and 23 yards to set up the seven-yard strike to Johnson. "I think (Hunt) had a pretty good week," said Johnson. "He's more relaxed and patient, and can get you the ball where you want it." By Monday morning, Singleton was homesick and wanted to go home.

But South coach Mac Wier of Barnwell convinced him to stick out. "I'm glad I stayed because I would have missed out on all this," said Singleton. "There were a lot of scouts out here and I probably would have messed up my chance to show them what I could do. Coach Wier talked me into staying. He said if I left I'd kxk back and regret it." Singleton benefited from a strong game from his offensive line as the South rolled up 265 yards rushing on 46 carries.

"I thought we did a good job of controlling the football," said Wier. "You go with what you're able to do." The South victory snapped a four-game losing streak and North- South All-Star F(K)t-ball Game and wanted to leave early. After Saturday's Most Valuable Offensive Player performance for the South team, Singleton was glad he stayed. He achieved a rare 100-yard game in an all-star contest with 137 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries to lead the South to a 26-18 victory at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium. Singleton's original transportation plans fell through, and he arrived eight hours late Sunday.
