asksthatyoupleaseconsider makingdonationstoElizabeth nia.150W.CrestStreet, orman Dello Joio a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer with a lyrical style who wrote works for orchestra and chorus as well as several operas and an Emmy Award-winning television score, died July 24 at his home in East Hampton, N.Y. He was 95. He died of natural causes, according to his son Justin Dello Joio, who also is a composer. Much of Norman Dello repertoire was inspired by sacred scripture, religious poetry and the lives of Christian saints. He sometimes worked medieval chant into his melodies.

He wrote some of his best- known works in the 1940s and including Chaconne and which was first performed by the New York Philharmonic in 1947. His opera Triumph of Saint premiered in 1950 at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y., where he taught musical composition for five years. He later revised the work and it was performed by the New York City Opera in 1960. Theme and melodies in the opera were inspired by the life of Joan of Arc, the 15th century French warrior saint. Dello Joio returned to the subject for a number of compositions, including an orchestral version of Triumph of Saint in 1951.

Another of his operas, was commissioned by the San Francisco Opera and premiered there in 1961. Dello Joio wrote several pieces for ballet. Two of them, of in 1947 and in 1951, were commissioned by Martha Graham for her modern dance company. His on for strings and orchestra won a Pulitzer Prize in 1957. Dello Joio married Grayce Baumgold, a ballet dancer, in 1942. They had three children before they divorced in 1971. He married actress Barbara Bolton in 1974. PROLIFIC Norman Dello Joio, seen in 1961, was commissioned by the San Francisco Opera to write which premiered that year. A composer with a lyrical style, he also wrote works for orchestra and chorus. Karl Kuehl Major league manager, coach Karl Kuehl, 70, a baseball manager, scout and expert on player development, died Wednesday of pulmonary fibrosis in a Scottsdale, hospital. Kuehl was the manager of the Montreal Expos in 1976, posting a 43-85 record before being fired with two months left in the season. He went on to serve six seasons as a base coach with the Minnesota Twins, then spent 12 years as head of player development for the Oakland Athletics before becoming assistant to the general manager. 5, 1937, in Monterey Park.Hewas a minor league first baseman in the Cincinnati Reds organization. He rose to the AAA level in the Pacific Coast League and began his managing career at 21 with the Salem, Senators. Eric Dowling Dug tunnels for Eric Dowling, nicknamed for helping excavate tunnels used in the breakout from a World War II German prison camp that became known as the died July 21at a nursing home near Bristol, England. He was 92. Dowling played a key role in planning the 1944 escape of 76 prisoners from Stalag Luft III prison, near Sagan in eastern Germany now Zagan, Poland.

He forged documents, made maps and helped dig three tunnels code-named Tom, Dick and Harry. The daring breakout was one of the most celebrated incidents of the war and inspired the 1963 film Great Over almost a year, prisoners surreptitiously dug the tunnels 30 feet underground, shored up with bed boards. The 300-foot-long tunnel Harry was eventually completed. Dowling was not among the more than 200 prisoners chosen by lottery to make the escape attempt on the cold and moonless night of March 24, 1944. By the time German guards discovered the breakout, 76 men had crawled free.

All but three of the escapees were recaptured, and 50 were shot on the orders of Adolf Hitler to deter future attempts. Dowling was born in southwest England in 1915. Flight Lt. Dowling flew 29 missions as a navigator with the Royal Air Bomber Command. He was shot down in April 1942 and sent to the prison camp for Allied airmen.
