They were later established as true. Born in Blanding, Utah, in 1930, Shumway attended the University of Utah and served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a longtime West Coast bureau chief for what became United Press International and a White House assistant director of communications before joining the reelection committee in 1972. He left the committee in 1973.

From Times Wire Reports were denying charges without actually doing so. He was the main public contact for President Nixon's reelection committee while reporters tracked down who ordered the 1972 burglary of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate complex in Washington. The cover-up led to Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974. When the Washington Post reported that the FBI had linked the burglary to political spying and sabotage by Nixon's reelection campaign, Shumway called the story in 1972 "not only fiction but a collection of absurdities." Reacting to a New York Times story months after I Nixon defender, panel spokesman DeVan Shumway, 77, the spokesman for the Committee to Re-Elect the President who staunchly defended the Nixon administration throughout the Watergate scandal, died April 23 of lung disease at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Herbert A. Crew a resident of Pacific Palisades for 55 years, died peacefully April 23rd at St John's Hospital in Santa Monica after a struggle with cancer. He was 84. He was born to Herbert and Hallie Crew in Los Angeles in 1923.

His family traces their ancestry in California to the Gold Rush era. During the Depression, with his father often away, Herb worked many jobs while going to school in order to help support his mother and sister, including newspaper delivery, playground director, aircraft construction, and repo man. With the coming of World War II, he joined the Navy and served on the battleship USS Maryland in the Pacific from Tarawa to Leyte Gulf and Okinawa, surviving torpedo and kamikaze attacks while directing fire for the largest batteries. After the war, he graduated from USC and later worked on an MBA. He then went to work for Citizens' Bank, first in the Loan and then in the Trust Department.

He later became an independent investment manager and did philanthropic work. In 1946 Herb married Mildred Miles with whom he had four boys. After her death in 1964, he married Gail Beckwith who brought her own son to their marriage in 1967. Together they then completed the task of raising five not always cooperative sons. In addition, he was active for many years with the Palisades-Malibu YMCA, Pacific Palisades Baseball Association and the Methodist Church.

Once the boys were finally out the door, Herb and Gail enjoyed their lives together in the Palisades, along with occasional trips and cruises, until Gail passed away one year ago. Herb continued his active life around the Palisades until very recently, always a recognizable figure on the street with his jaunty bow tie. Herb is survived by his younger sister and fellow Palisadian, Catherine Tanner; his sons and their wives, Herb and Linda Crew of Corvallis, Oregon, Dick and Deanna (Hubbard) Crew of Scottsdale, Arizona, Don Crew and Laura Nichols of Victoria, British Columbia, John Crew and Sheila Gadsden of San Francisco, and Steve Beckwith and Ellen Breisachaer of Santa Rosa; 11 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. A celebration of Herb's life will be held at Aldersgate Retreat Center, 925 Haverford Ave, Pacific Palisades, on Friday, May 9th at 12:30 p.m. Since philanthropy was always an important part of Herb's life, his family suggests that a fitting way to honor him would be through special gifts to charitable causes of the donor's choice, or to one of Herb's favorites such as The Norris Cancer Center at USC, St.

John's Health Center Foun-dation, or the Palisades YMCA. DAVIS, Kenneth John was born on June 20, 1950 in Omaha, NE to Kenneth John Davis, Sr. and Lillian (Spears) Davis. June 4, 1925-April 27, 2008 Robert "Bob" Jensen, member of the greatest gen eration and newspaperman passed away on April 27, 2008 following a stroke and a long battle with Parkinson's.

Bob was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 4, 1925. On his 17th birthday Bob enlisted in the United States Navy. During his military training in the South the naive Midwesterner encountered the cruel realities of the Jim Crow South. His war experience and witnessing of indignities imposed on fellow African American soldiers enraged him the rest of this life. After the War Bob resumed his education at the University of Minnesota and became a journalist.

His career first took him to New York where he worked for the Associated Press. In 1953 he went to Washington, D.C. to work for the Washington Post. In 1957 he became Washington correspondent for the Buffalo Evening News. He covered Congress, Supreme Court, the White House and presidential campaigns.

On November 22, 1963 while meeting with Senator Hubert Humphrey he learned of President John Kennedy's assassination and left immediately to find Senator Edward Kennedy who was presiding over the Senate that day. Bob later joined Senator Humphrey's staff as press secretary. On August 6, 1965 the former Lt. Jensen then saw the Voting Rights Act of 1965 signed into law. It was the proudest moment of his life seeing legislation enacted to protect the voting rights of former fellow soldiers and their descendants.

In 1971 he went to the Los Angeles Times where he oversaw the Letters to the Editor page until his retirement in 1987. In his later years he enjoyed the company of his family, various canines and many Sunday dinners at his daughter's home. He is survived by his former wife Catherine "Timmie" Jensen of Washington, D.C. and Cobb Island, MD; daughter Maria Burrington, son-in-law David Burrington and granddaughters Rachel and Ingrid, all of Hillsborough, CA. His son Charles predeceased him in 2003.

His family wishes to thank the staff at the Atria Bur-lingame for their kindness in his last days. Bob insisted that his remains be donated to the Willed Body Program of the University of San Francisco Medical School. Services will be private. JOHNSON, Charles B.
