Tuesday June 29 1993Star Tribune Obituaries Target executive John Cushman dies at 53 iAlsonoted Wifem 101, St. Paul stockbroker He was firm's vice president, managed public affairs activities for 6 decades 1 A Cushman is survived by his wife, Madeline; four daughters, Angela Dallman, of Sacramento, Calif; Kath-ryn Boyer and Nicole Cushman, both of Chicago, and Carolyn Cushman, of Bloomington, and his mother, Kathryn Cushman, of Moscow, Idaho. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St.

Edward's Catholic Church, 9401 Nesbitt Av. Bloomington. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 to 1 1 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Memorials to the Diabetes Association of Minnesota are suggested. Arrangements are by Werness Brothers Chapel, Bloomington. John Cushman, 53, vice president and general counsel of Target Stores, died of complications from pneumonia Sunday at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina. In 1970 he joined the law department of Dayton Hudson Corp. and was chief counsel for Target Stores before becoming vice president in 1983.

He also managed Target's public affairs activities. "John was an invaluable contributor, not only as general counsel for Target but as someone who had a great perspective on almost every area of the business," said Robert Ulrich, chairman of Target. "He had a great sense of humor. His wit was always helpful in putting situations in the Boris Christoff, 79, one of opera's greatest basses and a renowned interpreter of Mussorgsky's "Boris Godu-nov," died Monday in Rome. He died at home from the effects of a stroke suffered six years ago, said his wife, Franca.

Christoff brought deep psychological insight and meticulous phrasing to his many roles. His voice was focused and rich, and he was comfortable singing in Italian, German and Russian. Above all, he combined the characteristic lushness and majesty of the Slavic voice with the purity of vocal line and refinement of the best of Italian singing. Aside from Godunov, he specialized in Verdi's grand old men and kings, including King Philip in "Don Carlo" and Fiesco in "Simon Boccanegra." proper perspective. Cushman, of Bloomington, was born in Moscow, Idaho.

He graduated from Dartmouth College and the University of Idaho Law School. He practiced in Idaho before becoming a special assistant attorney general in Minnesota in 1968. He was president of the Minnesota Corporate Counsel Association and on the board of governors of the Minnesota Bar Association. He was president of the Dartmouth Alumni Club of the Northwest, cochairman of the academic sweepstakes fundraiser for Breck School and a United Way volunteer. He also lectured at the Michigan Institute of Continuing Legal Education.

Pauf investor and stockbroker for six deci-'-ades, died Sunday at his home in SX. Paul. He learned the value of a good wP vestment at an early age, buying': newspapers at the local newsstand' and selling them for a higher price tt few blocks away. He worked as a pinsetter at alleys and as a stagehand at theater to earn money to study economics at Hamline University in St. Paul.

After the first year, he needed to earn mdn-' ey to return and approached univer sity officials about making a student recruitment film with advertising from St. Paul businesses. Each summer he and a friend traveled across the country showing' the film. Instead of returning to college' for his last year, he decided to continue the tours. After serving in the Navy during World War he worked in public relations for U.S.

Steel aftd International Harvester. In 1924 hi' landed his first job in investment banking selling bonds with Harold Wood Co. A year later he became' manager of the St. Paul branch of Livingston Co. When the stock market crashed, Liv? ingston closed most of its 40 but Kahlert stayed through several new owners.

He then joined an Old friend Einar Berg, and they became' general partners in a new investment! firm. They took advantage of a depressed market and purchased a seat' on the New York Stock Exchange for $63,000, which they sold for a huge profit years later. tw in 1964 company partner Carson' Jamieson died, and Kahlert and Berg decided to sell the business to Piper' Jaffray. Berg joined the Minneapolis' office, and Kahlert joined the Paul branch, working until he retired in 1985.
