Jacobsen's homer in the sixth put the West, ahead 4-2, but Greenville's Dax Norris provided some comic relief while bringing the East to 4-3 in the eighth.

After a Sears double, fan Debbie Johnson pinch-ran at second base. Johnson won a contest that allowed a fan to run in the game. Previously 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, Norris doubled over center fielder Corey Patterson's head. "I was 0-for-3 and looked like I had never swung the bat before, but I got a good pitch to hit, and I took advantage of it," Norris said. Johnson wasn't exactly a blur on the basepaths, but she managed to score without a throw.

"She looked like me running out there, so I wondering if she was ever gonna score," Norris said, smiling. The West scored two runs in the ninth, and Hunstville's Mike Ros-siter pitched a scoreless bottom half for the save. Chattanooga's Eddie Priest pitched three scoreless innings to earn the victory. Besides Norris, the most successful G-Braves player was reliever Jacob Shumate, who pitched a scoreless eighth. Marcus Giles was l-for-5, and Demond Smith went 0-for-2.

But All-Star Games are never about statistics, regardless of what Capra facetiously said of Inglin's hits. "The thing I'll remember is just the guys I met, probably some friends that I'll have in the future," Shumate said. "Some of these guys, I may even play with them someday. There's a bunch of great guys here, and it was just fun to get to know them." NBA DRAFT ORDER First Round 1 New Jersey 2. Vancouver 3.

Every player has flaws. Picking one who potentially has the ability to help is an inexact science at best. That has forced Silas and Bob Bass, the team's executive vice president of basketball operations, to consider players at other positions.

Centers Jason Collier (Georgia Tech) and Ernest Brown (Indian Hills) worked out along with Highr tower on Monday. Kentucky's Ja-maal Magloire, Utah's Hanno Mo-tola and Auburn's Mamadou N'di-aye, all big men, were in town Tuesday. "We want to take a hard look at these big guys," Bass said. "That'd be a good fit for us, a big guy. We're still kind of looking at the best player." And for those believing Carrawell to be the obvious choice, if available, Bass remains noncommittal.

"He had a good workout here, but it's wide open," Bass said. It appears hard for even a veteran like Bass to figure out what will happen next week. "There are seven guys, you can draw a line," he said, referring to their level of ability. "Then there after 12 or 13 you can draw a line. But you can always count on someone messing up.

You can certainly go from 18 or 25 or 26, throw them against the board and see who sticks." After a season in which the Hornets grieved the death of Phills then experienced the disappointment in the playoffs, they desperately need to select a player who sticks. Our Customers Refer Us To Their Neighbors! year, the Hornets have worked out several players at their practice facility. Duke's Chris Carrawell impressed the team with his athletic ability. His outside shot needs work, however. Cory Hightower, a 6-foot-8 wing from Indian Hills Community College, also performed well.

King led the hometown team for which he rooted while growing up to its first NFC championship game since 1979. "He was closer to the Super Bowl than I was to the national championship," Bowden said.

King's presence last week was a boon to Tigers quarterbacks trying to get Clemson into the national championship picture in 2000. When Clemson players worked out informally, King joined them. He worked on his accuracy by throwing balls into a mesh net target alongside starter Woodrow Dantzler and worked on his agility by threading balls back and forth through his legs next to No. 2 quarterback Willie Simmons. "I told them some little things I work on a day-to-day basis," King said.

"Honing in on where you're throwing balls, how accurate you are, what your feet are doing, are you going through reads? Little stuff like that, if you do everyday, become a habit." King also reminded campers about the importance of staying in school and making correct decisions. King made the correct ones on the field when he set a NCAA record for passing efficiency in 1998. He passed for 3,232 yards and 36 touchdowns with six interceptions, and Dantzler could see why. "I saw that out there," Dantzler said. "He's very accurate." King, Bowden and Rodriguez enjoyed phenomenal success at Tu-lane, which was 4-18 in the two seasons before Bowden arrived and 18-4 in the two seasons under him.

"All of a sudden to win 12 games and he's kind of the catalyst behind all of it," Bowden said, "there's a special relationship there that's kind of hard to describe." Bowden and Rodriguez jumped to Clemson and King was the No. 50 overall pick. "I don't think he or any of us expected him to start in his rookie year but things fell in place," Rodriguez said. "I think now he's going to be the future of that fran- chise." King's brother is a receiver recruited by Clemson, a place that showed some interest in Shaun. "I didn't want to run the option," King said.

"I wanted to throw the ball." King saw Clemson do just that in 1999, breaking the season passing record with 3,019 yards. "Oh, yeah, Clemson, they're big time now, they're on national TV every other week," King said. "I root for them just like I root for Tu-lane." Next year, Clemson is scheduled to play Tulane, which could leave King straddling the fence between his former coaches and former team. "I imagine he'll probably root for his alma mater," Bowden said. "If we sign his brother, he'll probably root for us." Call or stop by today.
