Some parochial school students are bused in to get shots. Nurses then are bused to other schools. Meningitis Continued from page 1B About the same time, they learned that a 3-year-old boy also had been hospitalized with symptoms of bacterial infection related to meningitis. Many officials involved said those events contributed to their lowest emotional state of the past two weeks. But there were others as well.

After Monday's vaccinations for 3,000 people who had come in close contact with West students, some hot line callers became angry. They wanted vaccine, too, even though health officials said they weren't necessary except for those who associated very closely with West students. Schwickert said one caller said: 'Can I blame you if my child For people who had worked hours and hours the hot that was a tough day." Just then, however, a Mankato couple with a middle-school student sent two bouquets and a touching thankyou note to phone-room workers. "That really helped our nurses here who were trying to help," Schwickert said. For many of those helpers, working together on a highly visible public-health mission appeared deeply satisfying, although tempered by Janavaras' death.

"We never felt alone in this because of remarkable support," said John Barnett, principal of West High. He said there were surprisingly few calls to close the school after health officials explained that meningitis bacteria spread only through very close contact. Even public health nurses and hospital staff members who spent hours with West students and patients didn't get vaccinated. "My chances of acquiring someone's droplets are pretty slim," Gleason said. "How often does someone sneeze in your face or spit in your mouth?" Even so, many residents were fearful.

"There's that insidious thing about who's going to be next," Barnett said. "Every time the phone rings, would it be someone from the hospital or Mike Osterholm? John Janavaras, 15, is sixth person admitted to hospital. Diagnosis: meningococcemia, a blood disorder caused by the same bacteria that cause meningitis. Marion Merrell Dow based in Kansas City, ships an emergency order of 280 bottles of 60 300-milligram tablets of the antibiotic Rifadin. 11:30 a.m. A 3-year-old boy, related to a West student, is seventh person admitted with symptoms.

11:39 a.m.. Janavaras dies. 5:45 p.m. Officials decide to distribute rifampin to West students to inhibit spread of the disease. SATURDAY, Feb.

4 Joe Kratzke goes home. Doses of rifampin are distributed to West High students. Marion Merrell Dow ships another 310 bottles of 100 tablets of rifampin. 2:20 p.m. Osterholm orders 5,500 doses of vaccine from Connaught.

SUNDAY, Feb. 5 5:30 a.m. 550 doses of vaccine are flown from Philadelphia. 2:05 p.m. Remaining 5,000 doses of vaccine are flown from Kansas City.

MONDAY, Feb. 6 Vaccinations and antibiotics are given to siblings and other family members of West High students. West High attendance drops to about one-third of 1,125 enrolled." Casey Houston leaves the hospital. TUESDAY, Feb. 7 Sara Kleinsasser and Jon Boyer are discharged from hospital.

THURSDAY, Feb. 9 Attendance at West reaches 80 FRIDAY, Feb. 10 Three-year-old boy is discharged. of my career." Barnett has worked at West for 19 years. Gordon Gibbs, director of human resources for the Mankato School District, said the experience "brought home to people the fact that this was not something where you simply got sick; you went to the hospital, and they made you well.

The deadliness of this disease was brought home to us." That was apparent during Monday's vaccinations at Mankato East shopping center. A 44-year-old man who declined give his name emerged from the impromptu storefront clinic and said he had debated whether to come because he believed "my faith will take me through it. I feel I'm under grace." But at the urging of his daughter and son, he agreed to get the shot. Officials said several events during the outbreak were notable. One was a hastily called meeting of more than 40 doctors, nurses, educators, public health workers and others at 6 p.m.

on Super Bowl Sunday, Jan. 29. It was the first of several similar meetings in the next week. "The interesting thing was, there was Mike Osterholm saying, 'I'm the expert in epidemiology, but you are the experts in your community, and how does this idea play out with Barnett said. The doctors and educators supported Osterholm and his proposals, Barnett said, and people's energy "went into the process of getting it done.

That says a great deal about the relationship the Department has with our local people." Osterholm likewise praised the cooperation of Mankato and Blue Earth officials: "In this job, in 20 years, I have not seen a local community respond so well." One example was the first round of vaccinations of 4,000 sevenththrough 12th-graders Jan. 31. It took six hours, starting at West High with 12 lines and 60 nurses. It continued as they packed their equipment and boarded buses to other schools. Osterholm said: "I got goosebumps when I went into the gym that morning.

It was nothing short of incredible." Gleason had calculated from past flu shot clinics that it would take 13.3 She also learned that when vaccinating large groups of students, it helps to have some of "their music" playing in the background. Someone contributed lollipops for those vaccinated at Mankato East High School. Additional efforts came from hospital pharmacists who "had to pull apart 2,400 capsules hand and then mix weight-related dosages to put intaid appropriate pint Al Neely, a registered nurse at the hospital. Special efforts also came far from Mankato. A driver for Connaught Laboratories, which makes the vaccine, had to maneuver through a Groundhog Day parade in Kansas City, to get the shipment to the airport in time for the next flight to the Twin Cities, a Connaught spokeswoman said.

By Friday afternoon, many people in Mankato again were cautiously optimistic. The hospital discharged the 3- year-old boy. That left only a 64- year-old woman still hospitalized from the seven cases diagnosed during the outbreak. The hospital's 10-phone hot line was closed after taking 43 calls Friday, compared with 1,204 the day after Janavaras died. The hot line received a total of more than 6,600.

But Osterholm's staff still was interviewing Mankato residents and taking throat cultures, trying to find the common link that he expected would connect all seven cases.
