Community Center CHICAGO Tlie Youth Symphony Orchestra of Greats-Chicago will open its 36th season with the fall concert at 7:30 pjn. Sunday, Dec. 6, at Orchestra Hall.

Among the student musicians participating in the concert will be Susan Granger of McHenry, a first-year member and the orchestra's principal oboist. Susan is a senior at High School for Girls in Mundelein. Principal guest conductor, Meng-Kong Tham, will conduct the orchestra in a varied program including the "Rienzi Overture" by Wagner, "Appalachian Spring" by Copland, "Fantasia" by VaiMflbnWUliams, and jSapriccio ttalien" by Tschalkowsky. The "Violin Concerto" by Sibelius will be performed by David Niwa, winner of the fall concerto competition. Niwa is the son of Mr.

and Mrs. Raymond J. Niwa of Chicago, and a senior at Taft High School He has been a member of the Youth Symphony Orchestra for two years, and his father, a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, has been his only teacher. Hie younger Niwa has won many awards and has soloed with several local symphony orchestras, as well as given recitals at the Cliff Dwellers Club in Chicago Tham, who will conduct this concert, serves as music director of the DePaul University Symphony Orchestra, assistant conductor of toe Civic Orchestra Chicago, and music director and conductor of toe Youth Symphony of DuPage. Prior to his current positions, Tham served as program director of WEFM radio, Music Associates of Unitel and conductor of the University of Illinois Medical Center Chamber Orchestra.

He holds both bachelor's and master's degrees from Northwestern University. Recently he appeared as guest conductor of the Singapore Symphony in toe city of Singapore. TheYputh Symphony Orchestra is composed of people from more than 50 high schools in Chicago and its suburbs who have auditioned for their positions.
