Lane worked Tyson's championship victories over Trevor Berbick, James (Bonecrusher) Smith and Tony Tucker. The first fight might have ended in controversy, but during it Tyson was dominant. He led by six points after six rounds on the cards of all three judges.

Olympic Trials. Hedican is proof that, with hard work, a player can rise above being lood enough to attract attention but mot quite good enough to be ranked the blue-chippers. "Let's just the system works because he's getting noticed now," St Cloud State coach Craig Dahl said. turn Dahl smiled as he spoke, a surprise in itself because Hedican will be the Huskies' captain as a junior this fall but only if he fails to make the team. Entering the gold- game at 7 tonight, when South team will face the North, Hedican seems a cinch to be wearing ltd, white and blue for the next year.

Hedican has not gone unnoticed all his life. He was MVP and an all-conference defenseman at North St Paul and played in the Maroon and all-star series. The NHL took too, and he was drafted in 3t 10th round by St Louis, which tow looks like a steal. "I didn't really Jxbect to be drafted," he said. VHedican received only one scholarship offer from St Cloud State 'nd jumped at the opportunity.

But ven then, he played out of position ius freshman season. "I thought with 3is speed, he would be a great for-tiard," said Dahl. $a1d Hedican: "I played defense all bantams. My sophomore in high school, they moved me to forward, probably because I was only about 5-8. A year and a half later, 1 was 6-2 and I moved back to defense my junior and senior years, TGoing to St Cloud was the best thing that happened to me because I thrown right in there and had to ilearn a lot My legs were starting to set stronger, and I had a lot to learn the game.

Bret Hedican as a forward my freshman year, but I was so happy to get the chance to play, I didn't complain." When Dahl held one-on-one meetings with players after the 1989-90 season, Hedican spoke up.

"He asked what I thought I could do to improve," Hedican said. "I said I'd like to try moving back to defense." Dahl complied. After scoring four goals and 17 assists as a freshman forward, Hedican had 19 goals and 30 assists as a sophomore defense-man. Hedican was named the Huskies' MVP in their first WCHA season and also was voted first-team all-conference. Hedican is far from confident about making the Olympic team, stressing that he is only trying to play his best "There are so many good players here," he said.

The list of defensemen includes: Ted Crowley, Pat Neaton, Luke Johnson, Ian Moran, Brett Hauer and Bob Kellogg on the East; Scott Lachance, Ken Klee, John Gruden, Glen Mears, Mike Muller and Jon Rohloff on the West; Keith Carney, Travis Richards, David Tretowicz, Matt Maain, Corey Machanic, and Derian Hatcher on the North; and Doug Zmolek, Chris McAlpine, Chris Imes, David DiVita and Arts Brimanis, along with Hedican, on the South. An impressive group, bristling with size, speed, toughness and puck-handling ability. But Hedican ranked ahead of them all in the skating, quickness, strength and agility tests tests last week. And his ranking has remained about the same this week, in game competition. It appears his days of being underrated are over.
