For the quarter, the company earned $950,000 or 40 cents per share on sales of $33,557,000, compared with earnings of $1,048,500 or 45 cents per share on sales of $36,793,000 a year ago. For the nine months, earnings were $2,949,000 or $1.25 per share compared with profits of $2,573,000 or $1.10 per share a year ago. Sales for the period were $104,679,000, down from $111,072,000. William T. Alldredge, Mirro president, said the continuing economic uncertainties and tight inventory controls being practiced by retailers makes it difficult to predict results for the fourth quarter. Gold and silver were fractionally higher. The U.S. currency gained ground against the French franc, with investors expressing continued uncertainty over the socialist government's pkna for nationalizing banks and industries. In Tokyo, the dollar hit a 2-month high. It closed at 235.85 yen, up from 234.95 late Monday. Later in Ijndon, it climbed to 235.48 yen. But the dollar lost ground against the British pound, the West German mark and Swiss franc. The pound rose to $1.8120 from $1.8040 late Monday. "It's having a sort of reaction to yenterday's sharp rise and could maybe go a bit lower," a dealer in Frankfurt said. Mid-morning dollar rates compared with late Monday: 2.3078 German marks, down from 2.3095 1.9153 Swiss francs, down from 1.9185 5.7970 French francs, up from 5.7887 1,222.75 Italian lire, down from 1,225.15 2.5505 Dutch guilders, up from 2.5407 1.2082 Canadian dollars, up from 1.2080 FMC receives safety award FMC Corp.'s Packaging Machinery Division, 975 Lombardi Ave., has received the National Safety Council Award for outstanding safety achievements. The award is based on the division's safe performance compared with the industry average set by the National Safety Council.
