He was preceded in death by a niece, Cindy Halvorson. He was born in Montevideo on November 18, 1945 to Melvin and Hazel (Anderson) Halvorson. He graduated from Montevideo High School in 1964. He later graduated from Concordia College in 1968 and University of Iowa Law School in 1971.

He married Marcia Ryer in Montevideo on June 24, 1967. They moved to New Ulm in 1972 where he practiced law at the Gislason, Dosland, Hunter Malecki Law Firm until the time of his death. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and served on the United Way of New Ulm's Board of Director's. Harland (Norling) Ferne, age 72, formerly of St. L.

Her short fiction was published in various journals, her latest publication was the Southwest Senior Center. She has been a resident at St. Francis Manor since 1990.
