Carroll Evans T}ie First Baptist Church of Manila began with the 20th century. At the turn of the century, Manila (then called "Cindy") was a small village consisting of a Post Office, a few business houses (mostly saloons) and a few residences. As time passed, people began to mqve in from other states; the village grew into a town and was give the name of Manila. Baptists, with a conviction of their ijeecl and a vision of great opportunities desired to form a Baptist Church. Grandpa and Grandma Cannon, formerly of Tennessee, and several ethers, began to make plans for such a church. The first place of worship was a brush arbor built by Horace and Sallie Cannon assisted by a few small children. At first there was a Sunday School and prayer meeting. Then as interest continued to increase, the church was organized with 17 charter members in 1901. The first year saw 26 people baptized. The newly organized church was not satisfied with » brush arbor, so plnas were immediately made for a house of brush arbor, so plans were immediately made for a house of Raleigh and Dunkin Street. Later the church moved to its present location on Baltimore Street, building on a lot donated by Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Williford. The ohurdh began construction of the present church plant in 1924. First deacons of the church were Grandpa Cannon, Grandpa Gardner, R. L. Williford, S. T. Hatfield and J. W. Bruce. Bro. Matthew was the first pastor. The church now has a membership of 468 with a yearly budget of $28,080. The church has voted to erect a new sanctuary in the near future. Last year the church gave 22 percent of its receipts to world missions. Rev. Carroll Evans is the present pastor. Under the leadership of Rev. Emmit Pipkins, the church constructed a new pastorium valued at $25,000, paying for it in less than three years.
