It's a question most of us constantly ask ourselves about everything from acting on our values: to the price of a baseball ticket.

When on faced with a decision, we agonize, rationalize, justify and generally end :101 up coming down on the side of comfort. Comfort once was going to be the goal of Carl Kabat, too. His brother, Paul, already had gone off to the seminary and so Carl was going to 1.10 follow the wishes of his parents and become a doctor. "My family was poor," recalled "I'd become a doctor and make someis money and help take care of everyone." 91. "We sent him to medical school," said his mother.

"He almost had a to breakdown. His stuttering became worse; he felt terrible. He was trying to please his mother." It was decided that Carl should seek to soothe his soul. He went into the seminary and into the priesthood and into following his conscience even when it has meant prison. He has spent most of the 1980s in various prisons for various actions.

The last sentence, from the action in Missouri, was the longest. It started off as 18 years, but was reduced to 10. on appeal. He served the maximum two-thirds of the sentence. (Paul's sentence was shorter because his record of civil disobedience is short.

-Morgan also has been out of prison for some time. Helen Woodson remains in a maximumsecurity prison for women in Florida.) sno It is ironic, at best, that people who DA take symbolic actions in the name of mg peace spend more time in jail than those who undermine trust in the banking system or corrupt the political system or who murder on the street. There is no shortage of irony, Carl Kabat acknowledged. "I've been in cellblocks where 350 of the 450 people were in for homicide," he said. "I never felt threatened.

Out of prison, there's a very real chance somebody might shoot me for my His beliefs seem like a nasty burden. net Kabat makes it clear that prisons haven't changed his view that people must act on their beliefs, even if it means more prison. As long as he is on the outside, the 57-year-old priest said, he will continue to live a life of 1.15 activism and poverty. Out of prison, a car and gasoline are his only major expenses, he said. But the car will be his home as well as his transportation.

Food comes cheap. "I'm used to places like this," he said, as he settled over eggs and bacon at Tobie's Restaurant, which is only a few miles from the prison. "But usually I come in carrying two thermos jugs and I ask for hot water in each one. Then I go back to my car and mix instant coffee in one, instant soup in the other." When the body demands something more solid, he said, dumpsters at most restaurants are filled with treasures. It's grim work eating from dumpsters; and trying to save the world from itself and undergoing long prison stays.

And yesterday, as he stepped from prison, there frequently were tears at the edges of Kabat's eyes. He cried for joy when he saw his mother. He cried for sadness when he started talking of other friends still imprisoned, and the agony of the Kurds. But he also bragged of how he had won four of the five basketball games he'd played in the prison yard Friday, even though a cataract in his right eye has messed up his depth perception and killed his outside shot. And he laughed and told stories and even had a comic remark about what appears to be a growing appreciation for war in the United States, and a shrinking peace group.

"It's like the old saying goes," Kabat said with a laugh. "They won't get away from us this time around. They've got us surrounded." How can he laugh after having spent so many years in prison? How can he laugh when he feels anger toward a war he found evil? "You can either sing and dance or you can cry," he said. "So what's the point of crying? Do what you can do today and put the rest in in God's 400. of.
