He graduated from the, University of Minnesota Pharmacy SchoolA and worked at Nelson Drugs on Payne Av. in St. Paul for several years.

He a past president of the St Paul Rotary He was a member of the Minnesota Pharma- ceutical Association, National Association Retail Druggists and Association of Naval By David Chanen Staff Writer Once more his friends and family will gather Friday to bury Charles (Herb) Koch of Golden Valley. Once more the prayers will be said and the casket lowered into the ground at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

This time they'll be burying the right Charles Koch. More than SO years ago, Koch was also buried just inside the gates at Fort Snelling, in a huge funeral arranged to honor the first Minnesotan killed during World War II. There were so many flowers at the funeral that they were distributed to hospitals. The disfigured body had been found in the Pacific Ocean in 1942. On it were a shirt bearing his name and a unique-looking ring, similar to one given to Koch by his aunt The Navy informed the family that Storekeeper First Class Charles Koch, who had been assigned to the USS Sabine, had died.

The body was returned, the burial Supply Co. in Minneapolis, and started his own business, LPG and NH3 Supply in St Louis Park, in 197S. He sold the business, now in Rogers, to his son, Gary, of St Michael, about 10 years ago. Koch was a member of the VFW and American Legion and received a distinguished service award from the LP Gas Association. He enjoyed ceramics, embroidery, playing guitar and singing country-western songs.

Besides his daughter, he is survived by Mariam, his wife of 49 years; two other daughters, Jan Ryan, of Orono, and Judy Peterson, of Chanhassen, and 11 grandchildren. Services will be held at 1 1 a.m. Friday at St George Catholic Church, 133 S. Brown Long Lake. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m.

A similar tanker had sunk, but because all ships were under radio silence, there was no communication between them. When Koch's father found out who really had died, Charles Henry Koch was exhumed and buried in Illinois. Peterson said her father "enjoyed talking about it the mix-up and actually thought it was kind of funny. He was very patriotic and enjoyed the novelty of a story like this happening to him. He didn't have any hard feelings about it." Koch, of Golden Valley, was born in Minneapolis and worked at a butcher shop until he joined the Navy and served for six years.

After the war, he married Mariam, studied accounting at the Minnesota School of Business and worked at United Petroleum Gas Co. in Minneapolis. He went into sales for the company and developed territories in Texas, Indiana and Illinois. He became co-owner and treasurer of Gas But the reports of his death were greatly exaggerated. In fact, Charles (Herb) Koch came back from the war, went to school, opened a business and raised a family before he died of cancer Tuesday at age 72 at North Memorial Medical Center in Rob-binsdale.

The man who died was 19-year-old Charles Henry Koch of Oak Park, 111. The first clue in the identity mix-up came in the mail about two months after Koch was reported dead. Herb Koch had sent his father a letter with a check enclosed money for an engagement ring for his girlfriend, Mariam. But the check was dated several days after the supposed date of death. "He knew that his son always dated the check on the day he wrote, so he knew his son was alive," said Koch's daughter, Cheryl Peterson, of Carver.

Navy officials would not cooperate with the senior Koch's efforts to find out details of his son's death. So he contacted his Army traveling. Aviation. He enjoyed He is survived bv his Jeffrey, of McLean, Craig, of Dellwood, and Steven, of Shoreview, and a sister, Bettys-Murphy, of South St Paul. A memorial vice will be held at 1 1 a.m.
