62-6 Columbia, Mo, Aug. Because of the country's great need for engineers, students of promise in engineering may be exempt from the draft, according to a letter from P. P. Claxton, commissioner of education, to Dean E. J.

McCaustland of the University of Missouri engineering school. The letter says that, according to a ruling of the War Department, technical students within the draft age should be treated in the same manner as workers in industries devoted to the manufacture of war material. Dean McCaustland has written letters to all who were students in engineering last year and did not finish their courses urging them, unless called into service, to return to school as a means of fitting themselves for greater aid to their country.
