Brother I. Patrick Hayes, who taught in the Christian Brothers schools for many years and was vice president of development for St Mary's College in Winona, died of a heart attack Saturday at Community Memorial Hospital in Winona. Hayes, of Winona, died on his 84th birthday. He was born in Chicago and entered the Junior Novitiate of the Christian Brothers in 1924. He earned a bache-.

lor's degree in mathematics from De Paul University in Chicago and a master's degree in educational psychology from the University of Minnesota. He taught math at schools in Kansas Gty, and Duluth and at De La Salle High School in Minneapolis and Cretin High School in St Paul From 1942 until 1957 he taught in Chicago and at St Mary's College and was principal of a school in Ev-anston, 111. He returned to St Mary's in 1957 and held several positions, including director of public relations, director Erwin Heinrich, 70; was service station owner New York Times Richard Scarry, a best-selling author and illustrator of children's books, died Saturday at Saanen hospital in Gstaad, Switzerland. He 'was 74. The cause was a heart attack, said his son, Richard Jr.

of 'Gstaad. Scarry (rhymes with carry), who was born in Boston and moved to "Switzerland in 1968, once wrote: "It's a precious thing to be commu- to children, helping them discover the gift of language and 'thought. I'm happy to be doing it" Scarry's illustrations are noted for details that toddlers, especially those learning to talk, find enthralling. Robin Warner, the publisher of Golden Books, said Scarry wrote and illustrated more than 2S0 books. His works were translated into dozens of languages.

Warner said "Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever," published in 1965 by Golden Books, has sold 4 million copies, and that more than 60 million copies of Golden Books by Scarry have been printed. "The Busy World of Richard Scarry," an animated television series, began running on Showtime cable and in Canada early this year. Richard McClure Scarry was born in 1919, studied at the Boston Museum School from 1939 to 1942, served in the Army and began illustrating books in 1947. He eventually began writing as well. Widely read books by Scarry include "Richard Scarry's Please Thank You" (Random House, 1973) and "Richard Scarry's Find Your Richard Scarry (1982) devoted his life to children's books.

He worked at the service station of a former employee in Minneapolis for a couple of years before becoming an attendant at Herb's Service Center in Plymouth in 1981.

Erwin H. Heinrich, 70, former owner of Nick's Union 76 in Minneapolis, died of a heart attack Monday at his home in Plymouth. Born in Hopkins, Heinrich worked for a railroad in Minnesota and for several years for a St. Louis Park company that treated utility poles and railroad ties with creosote. In 1943 he started working as a mechanic and service attendant at Nick's Union 76, next to his house at Lake Funeral Notices And related classifications.
