The author debunks many Hitchcock myths while providing a wealth of amusing, and sometimes disturbing, anecdotes. Hitchcock seems not to have been the weirdo that some biographers have painted him, though he was strange.

But he have been the man who gave us so many classics had he not been on the odd side. Neurosis gives the greatest artists their edge. Good for immortality, hard on the artist and those in his orbit. Most interesting are the methods that Hitchcock used to bring his vision of a film to life. Indeed, a Hitchcock movie was a finished product in the head, frame by frame, camera angle by camera angle, before a foot of film had been shot.

His much-criticized attitude toward actors there is some dispute if he ever really referred to them as was more the common-sense idea of a director with a vision. The actors were there to fulfill his and the need. If they did that, they would be rewarded by his skill and care. He admired stars with great personas. He give much which drove some actors crazy.

Doris Day had a near breakdown during Man Who Knew Too until she confronted Hitch. He said if been doing anything wrong, he would have mentioned it. She calmed down and gave a terrific performance. He admired stars with great personas Cary Grant, Tallulah Bankhead, Ingrid Bergman and Marlene Dietrich. He hired them to provide that persona for his film.

And he dilute their glamour. He stars, too most famously Grace Kelly, who was never more provocative and appealing under guidance than in and Catch a Hitch attempted to re-create some of glamour with Tippi Hedren of and fame. Tippi and the director parted unhappily. She now disparages him, but in the McGilligan tome, there is more understanding of periodic obsessions with certain actresses and his mounting frustration when he realized that Hedren was not Grace Kelly. If interested in a man who created icons and became one himself read this book.
