48' Saturday August 211 993Star Tribune Disc jockey Lance (Tac) Hammer dies Lance (Tac) Hammer, 52, of Edina, a radio broad caster and former general manager of WLOL-FM in Minneapolis, died of complications of cancer Friday at Methodist Hospital in St Louis Park. Hammer's voice had been familiar to Twin Cities radio listeners since the early 1 960s. He was born in Sisseton, S.D., and came to Minneapolis to attend Brown Institute. He got his first announcing job in Sioux City, Iowa. He then became a fixture in Duluth, announcing and doing pop music programming at WEBC and then WAKX.

He returned to the Twin Cities in the early 1960s as a drive-time disc jockey at KDWB-AM. He later moved to KRSI, where in 1973 he instituted one of the country's first "oldies" formats. In 1977 he joined KQRS-AM and FM as midday disc jockey and soon rose to program director. Hammer left KQRS in 1982 to join WLOL-FM as midday announcer. He soon was promoted to program director and helped the Top 40 station achieve No.

I music ratings in the Twin Cities by 1984. He was promoted to general manager in 1987, a position he held until WLOL was sold to Minnesota Public Radio in 1991. He had owned Hammer Communications, a radio consulting business, since then. Last month the Midwest Communications Conclave, a nonprofit broadcasting organization, gave Hammer a Rockwell Award for lifetime achievements in the field. He is survived by his wife, Corinne Wiles; his mother, June Hammer, of South St Paul, and sisters Marcie Martin and Nancy Worm, both of SouthStPaul.

He taught at Jefferson for 17 years. He had appeared in TV commercials for United Hospitals, 3M, First Banks, Hardware Hank, Ford Motor Co. and other businesses. He also had been a model for several print advertisements. He was in two feature films.

He played Gus in "One Day" with Dick Van Dyke, and he played Charlie in "Ice Castles." He also had acted in many plays, from Broadway to community theater. Besides his wife, survivors include daughters Roxanne Magnuson, of Lake Oswego, Ore, and Karen Carlson, of Piedmont, S.D.; a son, David, of Park Rapids; a sister, Eileen Glessner, of St. Paul, and one grandson. A celebration of life gathering will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Phalen Park Funeral Home, 1233 Arcade St.

Paul. Warren Magnuson, 65, a retired teacher at Bloomington's Jefferson High School who directed plays for professional and community theater groups, died Aug. 8, apparently of a heart attack. He and his wife, Carol, moved to Park Rapids, when he retired in 1986. He came back to the Twin, Cities for kidney dialysis and was staying at a motel in south Minneapolis when he died.

Magnuson directed a summer school production of the musical "Anything Goes" in Burnsville in 1992. The year before he was technical director and adviser for the Woodtick Theatre in Akeley, his wife said. He was managing and artistic director for "I Do! I Do!" at the Village of Smokey Hills Theatre in Osage, in 1990, and managing and artistic director of "Viking!" at the outdoor amphitheater in Park Rapids in 1988. He also directed productions at the Ensemble Theater of Melbourne, from 1987 to 1989. Magnuson was a native of St Paul.

He served with the U.S. Army in Japan after World War II, and graduated from Hamline University in St Paul in 1951. He earned a master's degree in 1963 from Winona State University and did graduate work at Kenneth L. age 41, of New Hope. Fun notice Sunday.

He enjoyed hunting ducks and geese and was an avid fisherman, once pulling in a 36-pound northern.

He was a life member of Ducks Unlimited. He traveled extensively and had visited relatives in Sweden. He recently returned from Alaska. Besides his daughter, he is survived by his wife, Mary, sons Robert and Richard, both of Minneapolis, and Roger, of Cushing, sisters Lorraine Robinson and Eleanor Kiscaden, both of Minneapolis; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Memorials to the Stroke Network at Courage Center are Engle Paul L. Hultman, 81, a masonry contractor and former president of the Paul Hultman Mapco Sand Gravel Allied Ready-Mix and the Minneapolis Concrete Contractors Association, died Thursday at his home in Edina. He apparently suffered a heart attack or a stroke, said his daughter, Rosemary, of Circle Pines. Hultman was a Minneapolis native and a graduate of South High School. He worked for his father, Gust, who was a masonry contractor, and took over the business at age 24 when his father died.

He built the Paul Hultman Co. into one of the largest concrete masonry companies in the Twin Cities, his daughter said. He also owned Mapco Sand Gravel formerly at Interstate Hwy. 494 and Xerxes Av. S.

in Bloomington. He was president of Allied Ready-Mix and the Minneapolis Concrete Contractors Association at one time. He retired in 1965. He was a life member of the YMCA and sponsored the swimming contest at the downtown Minneapolis YMCA for many years. He was a member of Zuhrah Shrine Temple and a 50-year member of Joppa Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite.

Mueller, 86, a Lutheran minister who served as visitation pastor in Mound, Chas-ka, Watertown and Young America after he retired in 1972, died Thursday at a nursing home in Carlton, Minn.

He suffered from Parkinson's disease, said his son David, of Excelsior. Mueller was born in Kimmswick, and moved to Stewartville, with his family when he was an infant. His father also was a Lutheran minister. He decided at an early age to become a pastor, and graduated with honors from Concordia College and Seminary in Springfield, 111. He was minister of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bou-ton, Iowa, from 1933 to 1964.

In 1934 he started a mission in Perry, Iowa, which in 1938 became Trinity Lutheran Church. He was minister of Zion Lutheran Church in Lu Verne, Iowa, from 1964 until he retired and moved to Mound in 1972. He also was a longtime chaplain at Woodward (Iowa) State Hospital and was instrumental in starting the Lutheran Home for the Aged in Perry, Iowa. Mueller continued working as a visitation pastor until 1984.
