Sophomore shortstop Alyson Garmatz was 2-for-4 while senior first baseman Michelle Reed was l-for-3 with an RBI. Reed, Brittany Parker and Emily Askins were all celebrating their final home weekend and had banners with all three of their numbers 9,18 and 15, respectively displayed on the center field fence. Game 2 had sophomore Kelsey Roberts pitching for Fort Hays, which had a three-run fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead late in the game. "Part of that inning I was telling them that I was sick of seeing the same swing over and over again with the same result," Hadley said. "If you're not happy with the result you gotta change something in the process.

That was the bottom line and they rose to the challenge. We just need to do that on a more consistent basis." Anna Herl started the fifth with a double and later scored Emily Herl's double. Garmatz singled in Emily Herl and scored on sophomore Heather Teater's double. "Game 2 was just another example," Hadley said. "We actually strung some things together and made some adjustments but that was just for one inning and you can't do that." Mesa State answered with a three-run homer with two outs by junior Shelby Mellinger.

Phillips (9-6) got the win in relief for the Mavericks while Roberts (7-14) suffered the loss for the Tigers. Freshman third baseman Alex Eaton led the Tiger bats, going 2- for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. The Tigers will end their season at 11 a.m. today with Rockefeller and Roberts, respectively, pitching. "As much a disappointment as this is, anyone who has watched our program all year, wow, we're young and we're going to be very good next year," Hadley said.

"The future is bright, it's matter of getting kids'in this program that can compete. You gotta want to compete, you gotta love to compete and that's the attitude we're looking for. We'll tweak the physical but we gotta have the mental and emotional first and I think we have a good nucleus of that coming back." Game note: Freshman catcher Hallie McMillen extend her hitting streak to a team-best nine games. net. HHS golfers take 6th BY THE HAYS DAILY NEWS HUTCHINSON The Hays High School boys' golf team finished sixth Friday at the 36-team Hutchinson Invitational at Carey Park Golf Course. On a day rainy, soggy, stormy day, the Indians shot 306, with senior Drew Steffen shooting a one- over 72 for sixth place. "I asked the kids what their goals were and they wanted to be in the top five," Hays High coach Mark Watts said. "My goal was for them to be in the top 10." The day started out at 8 a.m.

and because of weather, didn't end until 5:30 p.m. "The day started out with clear skies, but than played one hole and had an hour and a half rain delay," Watts said. Senior Nick Schlyer placed 16th for the Indians, finishing at 74. "It was a sloppy course and the kids really showed they were good mudders out there and they were able to grind it out in those conditions," Watts said. The Indians were the fourth- best Class 5A school, finishing behind champion Blue Valley West (293), Wichita Kapaun-Mt.

Carmel (305) and tying with Wichita Bishop Carroll (306). "I am so pleased with Drew Steffen," Watts said. "He was one over and finished in the top six. That's great for his resume. And Nick has been playing well all season." Sophomore Shelby Steffen finished at 79 and two freshmen, Spencer Scott and Zach Patterson, shot 81 and 87, respectively.

"The two freshmen had a tough day," Watts said. "You find out how much patience you have and it tells us where we are right now as far as 5A schools." The Indians will see more of that tough competition from Class 5A and 6A when they travel to Junction City on Thursday.
