SPORTS Tuesday, August 9, 1994 3D TRANSACTIONS Kendall to replace NAMES IN THE NEWS PC tabbed fourth in SAC polls yards of total offense allowed. Sparks said his team will likely not have senior quarterback Vincent "Pop" Williams and will have to rely on senior Erik Hut-chins, who platooned at times last year with Williams. Sparks said his secondary will also suffer because of academic casualties. "We have some holes we will have to fill, and we have some work we have to do," Sparks said "We have to get some young guys to come through for us." Meanwhile, Perry's Blue Hose team will look to get off to a better start than in 1993, when PC lost four of its first five games, then won four of its last six. Perry's offense will be led by sophomore quarterback Randy Sullivan of Travelers Rest, last year's SAC Freshman of the Year.

His defense will be headed by a trio of returning linebackers: Antonio Merriweather, Raymone George and Damon Carr. "We're awfully excited about our season," Perry said. "We did lose a lot to graduation especially on the offensive line and in the backfield, but we are awfully excited about having Randy Sullivan back as our quarterback." USA SOCCER Under-17 Girls National Championship, 11 p.m., SptSo TENNIS Thrlftway ATP Championship, 1 P.m., ESPN By Tim Peeler Staff writer HICKORY, N.C. Carson-Newman, which has won nine football championships in the 19-year history of the South Atlantic Conference, is the overwhelming choice to repeat as SAC champions. Both the coaches and media covering the conference tabbed the Eagles as the preseason favorite Monday morning in the league's annual preseason kick-off. Coach Ken Sparks' team coming off an 8-2-1 season last year in which it went undefeated in the SAC got 17 of the 20 first-place ballots in the media poll and seven of the eight top votes in the coaches' poll. Presbyterian, under the guidance of fourth-year coach John Perry, was tabbed for fourth in both polls (all alone in the media poll and tied with Garner-Webb in the coaches poll).

Elon got the remaining first place votes and was second in both polls, just ahead of Lenoir-Rhyne. The reason Carson-Newman was selected is simple: tradition. The Eagles have lost only two conference games since 1988 and won the league title five of the last six years. The Eagles also earned the league's first-ever bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs last year, losing in the first round to North Alabama 38-28. Even though Sparks poor-mouthed his team to the media and his fellow coaches, bemoaning the potential loss of 13 players to academics, few felt sorry for him.

He still has 16 returning starters, including nine from the team that ranked first in the conference last year with only 312.3 Christie wins HELSINKI, Finland (AP) Britain's Linford Christie shook off a false start and won his third straight European 100 meters championship Monday. Christie, the European record-holder in 9.87, won in 10.14 seconds in his first race since a three-week layoff because of a hamstring injury. After three i Spencer at AP reports CONCORD, N.C. Road racer Tommy Kendall will replace Jimmy Spencer as driver of the Ford Thunderbird owned by Junior Johnson in The Budweiser at The Glen this weekend, team officials said. Spencer broke his right shoulder when he crashed Saturday during the Brickyard 400.

Kendall, 27, has won five IMSA championships and an SCCA title. His Winston Cup experience includes the 1989 Bud at the Glen. "Tommy is a bona fide road racer," said Mike Hill, Spencer's crew chief. "He's the first person that came to mind when we found out Jimmy wasn't going to be 100 percent at Watkins Glen." Qualifying for Sunday's race at Watkins Glen, N.Y., begins Friday. PRO FOOTBALL: Former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tim Barnett was bound over for trial Monday in Milwaukee on a charge of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl.

Circuit Court Commissioner Audrey Brooks closed Barnett's preliminary hearing at the request of the prosecuting and defense attorneys. Barnett, 27, was charged with second-degree sexual assault of a child after the girl, a hotel maid, told authorities that Barnett pulled her onto his hotel room bed and ran his hands over her clothing. The incident occurred June 14 at a hotel on the city's northwest side. He remained free on $3,500 bond. No trial date was set.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Brad Autry, a graduate assistant basketball coach at Central Oklahoma, has been hired by Baylor in Waco, Texas, as a restricted earnings assistant coach. Autry, a native of Irving, Texas, replaces assistant Troy Drum-mond, who resigned after last season amid allegations that he gave a player a term paper for an English class. Auburn, after submitting a report to the SEC about Beasley's surgery and rehabilitation, announced that "no impropriety was found on the part of Auburn University or its staff." Beasley, a star running back at Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, signed with Aubum in February after rushing for 3,894 yards and 62 touchdowns during his prep career.

However, he will not be considered an Auburn athlete until he reports for practice Wednesday along with the other freshmen. Rich Brooks announced Monday he is stepping down as athletic director at the University of Oregon in Eugene, to concentrate on a "critical" upcoming football season. Brooks is entering his 18th season as the Ducks' head football coach and is one of two people in NCAA Division I currently holding both titles. The other is Chris Ault of Nevada. The Cotton Bowl, shunned by the Tier I bowl alliance, could have an option in the Big 12 Conference which is considering plans for its championship playoff game.

Cotton Bowl officials are scheduled to meet this week in Fort Worth, Texas, on remaining choices for the 58-year-old event. The Big 12 is waiting for the bowl's next move. In a move that come as no surprise, the New York Rangers will name Colin Campbell as head coach Tuesday in New York to replace the recently departed Mike Keenan.
