COLUMBLA N. Heyward Clarkson 84, of 1401 Heatherwood Road, died Aug.

25, 1995. He attended the University of South Carolina and was a 1935 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. He was a member of the SAE, ODK and Phi Beta Kappa fraternities. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, where he served in the Philippines and the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla. He practiced law in Columbia for many years.

He was appointed federal administrative law judge in 1975 and served in this capacity until he retired. He was the former president of the Richland County Bar Association and was appointed by the state Supreme Court as secretary of the Grievance Committee. He was manager of the write-in campaign to elect Strom Thurmond to the U.S. Senate upon the death of Sen. Burnet Maybank.

He was a member of the 4th Cir- cuit Court Judicial Conference and vice chairman of the committee for the erection of a monument to the late Gov. James F. Byrnes. He was the organizer and president of the Heyward Foundation and a member of the Columbia Rotary Club, the Columbia Lions Club, the Forest Lake Country Club and the St. Andrews Society.

He was chairman of the board of Travelers Aid and president of the Columbia Cotillion Club. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, where he served as a vestryman. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Westmoreland Clarkson of Columbia; two sons, H. Heyward Clarkson III of Greenville and R. Westmoreland Clarkson of Win-nsboro; a daughter, Eugenia C.

Brabham of Columbia; a brother, the Rev. Allen Boykin Clarkson of Augusta, and eight grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Services: 3 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral with burial in the church yard.

Francis Hospital. He was a son of the late Doc and Bessie Lee Sheppard Ballenger. He retired from J.P. Stevens Slater plant, and was a member of Ebenezer Masonic Lodge. Surviving are his wife, Arvenia M.

Carol Knighton, Haughton, La. Carol William Knighton, 66, died Aug. 25, 1995, in Bossier City, following a brief illness. He was an electrical technician with for 32 years before he retired and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of New Hebron Baptist Church in Panola, Texas.

Surviving are his wife, Joye Nuckolls Knighton of Haughton; two stepsons, Jeff Thomas and John Thomas, both of Bethany, Texas; two stepdaughters, Anita Crenshaw and Elaine Digby, both of Bethany; sister, Sandra Waddell of Manning; and two great-stepgrandchil-dren. Jennie Salters Mack, Waterloo Jennie Salters Mack, 79, of U.S. the South Carolina Employment Commission and a member of Florence First Presbyterian Church. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Dorothy) Leslie of Hodges and Mrs. Maurice (Evelyn) DePass of Dothan, Ala.

Jettie Ellington Page, 87, of 1851 Oregon Hill Road, died Aug. 25, 1995, at Morehead Long Term Care Center. Born in Rockingham County, N.C, she was the wife of the late Hubert F. Page. She retired from American Tobacco Co.

and was a member of Community Baptist Church. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Hazel P. and Ted French and Audrey P. and Preston Cox, all of Ruffin, and Rebecca P. and Lindsey Jones of Reidsville, N.C; a son and daughter-in-law, Elbert R.

Wilkerson Funeral Services, Reidsville. Orrie Mae Rhoden, Ward Orrie Mae Strom Rhoden, 90, died Aug. 25, 1995, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill. She was a retired house mother at Winthrop College (now Winthrop University) and a member of Ward Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Janie Rhoden Moser of Rock Hill; a son, James Fairey Rhoden of Ward; three sisters, Sadie Briggs of Union, Irene Hiers of Barnwell and Elizabeth Eaton of Winston-Salem, N.C; two brothers, S.T.

Strom of Union and Lewis Strom of Ben-nettsville; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services: 3 p.m. Sunday at Bland Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Spann United Methodist Paul Barnett, Laurens Paul Brian Barnett, 35, of 307 ponway died Aug. 26, 1995, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Fountain Inn. He was employed with Carolina Commercial Heat Treat Fountain Inn, and was formerly employed with American Pipe and Plastic Co.

He was a Navy veteran pd attended Laurens First Apostolic Church. Surviving are his mother, Shirley liles Barnett of Laurens; two brothers, Robert Edward Barnett pnd Larry Eugene Barnett, both of Laurens; and a sister, Mrs. Mark (Susan) Barlowe of Laurens. Conway Laurens. Sarah Brown, Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Sarah Lena Ouzts Brown, 86, died Aug. 25, 1995. She was a government clerk before she retired and was a member of Beach United Methodist Church in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Surviving are a son, Robert Brown of Ponte Vedra Beach; a sister, Mary O'Hamilton of Aiken; and two grandsons. Services: 1 p.m. Monday at Harmony United Methodist Church in Johnston with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Bland Funeral Home, Johnston.

Ellison, Greenville Jewell Edna Jones Ellison, 76, of King Mountain, N.C., formerly of Greenville, died Aug. 25, 1995, at Angel Community Hospital in Franklin, N.C., following a number of years of declining health. She retired from J.P. Stevens Monaghan plant, and was a member of Monaghan Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Larry Milton Ellison of Kings Mountain; a brother, Delphin Jones of Hayward, two granddaughters; and four great-grandsons.

24, 1995, at Laurens County Hospital. He retired from Enoree Textile Mill and was a member of Jeptha Lodge 27 and Duncan's Creek Baptist Church in Clinton. Surviving are two brothers, the Rev. W.E. Byrd and Benjamin Byrd, both of Gray Court; and a sister, Jo-sie Ruth Anderson of Gray Court.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Duncan's Creek Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The family is at the home of the Rev. W.E. Byrd, Route 2, Franklin Drive, Gray Court.

Goins Funeral Home, Laurens. Sarah Jones, Greenville Sarah Louvinia Jones of 108 Watts Ave. died Aug. 22, 1995, at to be the "Memphis of Germany." The rivalry is intense, but friendly, even though Bad Nauheim upstaged Friedberg by holding its festival a week before Friedberg's. "We are two Elvis towns in Germany.

There is no war. He was a part of both," said Bad Nauheim Mayor Peter Keller, who was born in Friedberg and whose brother Michael heads the cultural office there. Both towns are 25 miles north of Frankfurt. Elvis lived in the Hotel Grunewald for several months before moving into a rented house. Saturday, on a small patio in front of the art deco hotel, Keller unveiled a 6-foot stone column with Elvis' face at the top and a dedication to "The King of Rock and Roll." This week, Friedberg will rename a small, tree-lined square as Elvis Presley Place.

Inside a theater across the street from the Bad Nauheim hotel, fans mingled around stands selling Elvis CDs and a new book by local author Heinrich Burk: "Elvis in the Wette-rau" (the region of Bad Nauheim and Friedberg). They watched videos of Elvis' life and munched on hot dogs and hamburgers. In one corner, Martin Anthony of Nashville, a pretty good Elvis lookalike, signed autographs and posed for family pictures. He is on his third trip to Germany to perform Elvis music. "They love it here," he said.

Samuel E. Mosteller, Greenville Ethel Station Mosteller, 88, formerly of 305 Old Pendleton Road, died Aug. 26, 1995, at Magnolia Manor following a period of declining health. Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Matthew Sherman and Harriett Sizemore Station and the wife of the late Samuel E. Mosteller.

She retired from J.P. Stevens Monaghan plant, and was a member of John Calvin Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Lillian Wham Bible Class. Surviving are a granddaughter, Donna N. Hazelwood of Greenville; a grandson, Samuel Keith Newton of Greenville; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Helen M.

He graduated from Clemson College (now Clemson University) and was an Army veteran of World War II, where he served in the European Theater. He was a field deputy with 'It I The Associated Press Church Cemetery. Grace Eubanks Riddle, Duncan Grace Eubanks Riddle, 73, of 398 W. Lakeview Drive, died Aug. 26, 1995, at her home.

She was a retired nurse technician and a member of Morningside Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Dan Riddle of Taylors and Mike L. Riddle of Duncan; six brothers, James Carl Eubanks Jr. of Punxsu-tawney, William Eugene Eubanks and Billy Bowen Eubanks, both of Spartanburg, Joe Bendell Eubanks of Blue Ridge, Harry Lee Eubanks of Pilot Mountain, N.C, and Larry Lee Eubanks of Winston-Salem, N.C; a sister, Margaret Keith of Spartanburg; and a grandchild. 26, 1995, at his home. Born in Pickens County, he was the son of the late E.W. and Leila Powell Whitlock. He was a former assistant fire chief of the Easley Fire Depart-ment and a member of Geer Roy B. Whitlock Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a member of the G.M.

"For me he is the Jesus Christ of the 20th century," said Silvie Schmidt, 25, who took an overnight train from Vienna, Austria, for the one-day festival.

"He was so charismatic, his music was so lovely." Others from Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and across Germany about 1,000 in all made the pilgrimage to Bad Nauheim, a spa town ip central Germany. I Many young women in the crowd wore '50s-style dresses, while Elvis-style hair, long sideburns and embroidered shirts were de rigueur for the serious male fans. Presley lived in Bad Nauheim while he did his military service two miles down the road in Friedberg from October 1958 through February 1960.
