A-7 CENEENTERTAINMENT Lingerie gets new lift as underwear fashions change the NEW look By SEAN SCHULTZ 01 Itw Prm-Gaitrl The braless phase of the early 70s is long gone. We're back to a romantic era in lingerie with a host of lace and satin underthings peeking demurely from beneath sheer blouses and fancy dresswear. In traditional white or the even more popular nudes, in soft pastels or vibrant wines, dainty underwear is being shown and worn in a variety of combinations. Some women, however, are unsure just when to wear that teddy, or if the camisole and tap pants are right with a certain outfit. Nona Singer, owner of Katharine on North Washington Street, a shop specializing in foundations, has tips for the lingerie shopper.

The teddy, a one-piece bra and panties combination, takes the place of a slip and bra under a dress or skirt and blouse, and can be worn under slacks, too. The teddy often has a built-in bra, sometimes with underwiring; the larger-busted woman can wear a strapless bra under it. The teddy can double as sleepwear. Some are cut for a looser fit just for that purpose, while others serve the sleeper or go undercover beneath clothing. They all snap at the bottom.

4 awt Panties come in bikini, hipster and brief sizes, along with tap pant length. Bras offer better support and a good line with under-wire styling, in reality a plastic Btrip running under the cup. Bras can be found with much lacy detail or with a smooth cup look for under those knits. The small percentage of the female population who scorned bras have started using the support item again, according to Mrs. Singer, after finding out going braless wasn't good for them and left them out of shape and suffering from stretch marks.

The demise of the pantsuit has led to a return of the dress. That fashion change has had much to do with the return of fancy lingerie. "Ladies are getting back to wearing dresses rather than pantsuits," Mrs. Singer said. "They're wanting to look a little more feminine again.

People are tired of the basic, tailored look." The lingerie fabrics are certainly soft and feminine. Tricots and satins are cool and lovely, as is the cotton-dacron blend. Lingerie is also much easier to care for today than it was 10 or 20 years ago. Most of it should be hand washed and hung to dry, or machine washed on a gentle cycle, placed in the dryer for a minute or two, then hung to finish drying. "Most people wreck their lingerie by over-drying it," Mrs.

Singer said. They wear their things, spoil them in the laundering process, then read the labels to determine what they should have done. Showy lingerie is not meant just for the junior-sized figure. The same styles in camisoles and teddies range from size 32 to 46. Pretty bras and slips are available in unpadded, lightly padded or heavily constructed styles and are also made to accommodate mastectomy patients.

If wom with a sheer dress that requires a slip, add either a half-slip or culotte slip to the teddy. The camisole or chemise, 8 waist-length, loosely gathered top with straps, is usually lace trimmed and lovely. It is meant to be wom beneath blouses and over the bra, together with either a half-slip, petticoat or tap pants. Combined with panties or tap pants, you can go to bed in your camisole, too, wearing it as shortie pajamas. Tap pants take the place of panties and are meant to be worn over pantyhose.

Popularized by Ginger Rogers who wore net stockings under them for her tap dance routines, the tap pants have a longer, looser leg, usually lace-edged, than regular panties do. Fancy garter belts are coming back into style. Mrs. Singer said they never really left. Many local women who could not or preferred not to wear pantyhose have stuck by their garter belts and conventional nylons over the years.

Now with the romantic emphasis returning, some pantyhose wearers are switching allegiance, opting for a lacy black garter belt to make them feel feminine and alluring. Petticoats or crinolines, starched and cottony, are all the rage with this year's Santa Fe styling in skirts and dresses. The dresses feature a flounced hem and full cut, requiring that an edging of petticoat peek out underneath. Body briefers or corselets, in and D-cup sizes, are one-piece lightweight foundations that may be styled loosely or very cdntrolled to shape the wearer. They come with different leg lengths, from the brief, tap or long leg looks to open bottoms.

The teddy is similar but more a fashion piece, while the body briefers emphasize control. Brides today are opting for the merry widow, a strapless one-piece affair that goes from the bra down to the garters. White and lacey, the merry widows are just right under a lovely wedding gown. They are also worn, as they were years ago, under strapless formals for other occasions. Slips come in all shapes and sizes to accommodate fashions.

Dresses can be worn from above the knee to mid-calf and below and so can slips. Full slips often have built-in bras for one-piece dressing. Half-slips have side slits or front slits to match up with the slits on your skirt. For the popular culottes or split skirts, there are culotte half -slips. 1 A 1 Special to the Prtss-Gazett The garter belt, lacy and beribboned, is back in fashion, shown above left with matching bra and panties.

It comes in all colors, feminine, dainty and alluring. The body briefer, above right, is made of a woven stretch fabric and is 'a shaper worn under dresses, sweaters, skirts or slacks. Body briefers come as loose or as confining as the wearer demands. Llnwrlt from Kottwrlnt Channel 5 gets into helicopter whirl Why. Nero's? French Croissants! The Federal Communications Commission has accepted Channel 26's application for increased power and antenna height. The independent station is seeking the increases to extend its coverage area so it can be more competitive.

Channel 26's proposal, which has been amended upward from the one it originally announced, seeks a tower facility 1,436 feet above ground (vs. the present 500) and top power of 2.8 million watts (vs. the present for live reports. Some of the possibilities: A reporter doing a live re Spock! Green Bay, Wl 54303 Wilck said. "This is just another part of our continued upgrading," he said.

Wilck cited various other equipment which has been purchased for the news department. "What we're talking about is well over $1 million worth of stuff we bought since Oct. 15, when our parent company took over," he said. "If we aren't the best, we are very close to being the best-equipped station in the state." Wilck added, "The philosophy of our parent company is it wants to achieve news dominance in Green Bay, and it's not particularly concerned how much it's going to cost to do it. "And it's not particularly concerned if it happens overnight.

What it wants to see is a consistent, steady growth in our news product." That's going to take some doing. Channel 2, with its news and adjacent program Within a week last year, Channels 2 and 11 got into flying helicopters. We saw a flurry of bird's-eye views in news reports, and the stations promoted the stuffings out of the new facet in TV news here. Meanwhile, Channel 5 scoffed. Robert Southard, president and general manager, said at the time, "(Helicopters) have no real value to the news viewer." Guess which station now has a helicopter? Riiiiiight.

Channel 6 officially began using one today, although some of you have seen it in the skies in recent weeks. Why the turnabout? In the past year, Channel 5 changed owners. The new parent company, Midwest Radio-Television, which also operates the powerful WCCO-TV in Minneapolis, obviously thinks differently about helicopters than the past one. 1 This is speculation but I wouldn't bet any money against it but I think the new helicopter is more WLRE Green Bay 'I I I Midwest's idea than Channel 5'g. Now for some details: Channel 2 still leases a helicopter and uses it with regularity.

Channel 11 has dropped out of the game, although it says it hires a chopper as needs arise. Channel 5 OWNS its helicopter. Ray Wilck, news director, called it a "Cadillac" helicopter bigger, faster and better-equipped than others used here. To the basic helicopter have been added all sorts of communication and transmission gear. "We felt to get into the helicopter thing we should do it right," Wilck said.

Total cost: $500,000, according to Wilck. Key in the package is microwave transmission gear port in the chopper; overhead live pictures of an event; a live report beamed from the ground to the helicopter for transmission back to the station and onto, the air, taping a report on the ground and replaying it aboard the chopper in the sky for transmission onto the airwaves. Wilck said local police will have access to the helicopter in emergency situations. "Well be footing the bill for it, but it's a community service," he said. You can be sure Channel 5 will be promoting the dickens out of its new acquisition.
