In charge of handling the pitchers was catcher Doug Camilli, who went on to play in the major leagues with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Senators. Camilli, noted for having a strong arm, batted for Green Bay with 65 RBIs and eight home runs. Following the season, he was named a second-team all-star.

By JIM HAYES Ol the ProM-Ooiettt The Green Bay Dodgers captured the 1959 Three-1 League Championship behind a strong pitching staff led by Pete Richert, Burbon "Teacup" Wheeler and Billy Hunter. In the Dodgers' championship series with Des Moines, Green Bay pitchers allowed only 13 runs in four games and ((71-74-1I4 74 4( 7-Jl 7170-71-MI 71-70-74-lli 7l-4(-7J-ll( 70-7S-ll! li- 70-74-11) JI-7I-74-1II 71-44 TO-)), 40-75-74-lK 70-71-7J 70-70-7 1 4(-71-7(-H0 4( 74 7(1H Trickle wins pole position agreed. "Three or four shots is not an insurmountable lead," Graham said after he put together a 67 and advanced to third place at 203, "There's only one person between me and the lead. That makes my chances a lot better." Still, he said, his work is cut out for him. "The golf course is playing as easy as it can play.

Obviously, Bob is playing very, very well. I'd figure I have to shoot 65 or 66 tomorrow to win." "I'm trying not to even think about tomorrow," said Gilder. "I'm just trying to hang in there." Phil Hancock and veteran George Archer were tied for third at 204. Hancock closed up with a 66. Archer, only one stroke back of Gilder when the day's play started, slipped to a 71.

Gilder, whose last victory came in the 1980 Canadian Open, said he was "nervous, to say the least. It's been a long time since I've had the lead. I didn't play as solid as I have, but I'm happy I was able to make some birdies." Starting with a one-shot lead, he played his front side in 34, then pulled away with consecutive birdies on the 14th and 15th holes. He got an 8-iron close on the 14th and dropped a 10-footer on the 15th. -jot DALLAS (AP) Bob Gilder composed a front-running, 3-under-par 67 and stretched his lead to an impressive three shots Saturday in the third round of the $350,000 Byron Nelson Golf Classic.

Gilder, winner of two titles in seven years of PGA Tour activity, took advantage of another day of near-ideal scoring conditions to compile a course-record score of 199 for 54 holes. That's 1 1 shots under par on the Preston Trail Golf Club course that has been robbed of its natural defenses by the absence of wind and has yielded the lowest scores in the 15 years it has played host to the tournament. Last year's event, played in more typical windy and stormy weather was won with a 1 -over-par total. This time, gray and gloomy skies have threatened on a daily basis but failed to produce the violent weather so common-here. Instead, the temperatures have been very mild with winds mere gentle breezes.

"Absolutely perfect conditions no wind, the greens soft and holding," said Curtis Strange, who had his second 65 of the tournament and moved into second at 202. "I feel very confident," he said, looking ahead to today's final round of the chase for a $63,000 first prize. "Being only three back, anything can happen." U.S. Open champion David Graham, an Australian now living in Dallas and a member of the host club, "The funny thing was, I played for Stan Wasiak the year before in the Pioneer League and we won the championship then," Camilli said. "Wasiak then managed us that year (1959) in Green Bay and we won the championship.

We had some fellas off that team in the Pioneer League that played in Green Bay. "We had good pitching that year. I guess I handled pitching pretty well. I went out to left held for a about a week during the middle of the season when I hurt my hand. During my career I ended up busting a thumb and splitting a finger.

"It was pretty much a team effort that won the championship. I just tried to hit the ball. At times I showed power. I was able to move up the next season. "Pete Richert and I went on to play track record (30.476) and I just overdrove into the corner," he suid.

"You can only go through a comer so fast, and I went through it a little faster." Alan Kulwicki of Milwaukee, driving a 1982 Camaro, qualified second in 30.69 seconds, or 117.275 mph. He'll share the front row with Trickle today. Rounding out the top five were Bob Strait of Flossmoor, 111., 117.043 mph; Mike Eddy of Midland, 116.148, and defending race champion Bob Sen-neker of Door, 116.020. 'MILWAUKEE (AP) After almost losing control on the first qualifying lap, Dick Trickle charged back on the next Saturday to win the pole position for today's Badgerland 150-mile stock car race at State Fair Park. Trickle posted a second-lap time of 30.65 seconds, or 117.432 miles per hour, in his 1981 Camaro, best in the 36-car field.

The 40-year-old veteran from Wisconsin Rapids, nearly spun out on the second turn of the first lap but managed to straighten out and continue. "I was trying for the Doug Camilli tvj'tA the Dodgers. We even played together in Atlanta of the Southern Association the following year after we played in Green Bay. Camilli, 45, moved up to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1961, after spending his last season in the minors with Atlanta in 1960 at the Class AA level. Camilli played with the Dodgers until he was sent to Washington in a deal prior to the 1965 season.

He played with the Senators before bowing out of baseball as an active player following the 1968 season. Following his retirement, Camilli spent four seasons as the Boston Red Sox' bullpen coach. After another brief he rejoined the Red Sox last season and is currently a coach with their Class A team at Winter Haven in the Florida State League. He is also an instructor at the Florida Professional Baseball School which is run by former Red Sox infielder Denny Doyle.
