Sunday, April 4,1993 20 (The Cnrnwillf News Disney's clothing business is no Mickey Mouse operation ground workers. Fabrics for both uniforms are 55 percent polyester and 45 percent wool in a herringbone pattern. Most of the uniforms are accented with red. Northwest employees say they like the Disney design. "It doesn't feel like a uniform," said Jan Pirrelli, a customer-service agent for the carrier at John Wayne Airport.

The new uniforms are more executive-looking than their predecessors, subtly prompting people to take additional pride in their work, Pirrelli said. The Northwest design won Disney top honors over about 300 other entrants in a recent annual competition sponsored by the uniform manufacturers association. Northwest's is the largest apparel contract Disney has snared so far, although Phelps' crew also has designed uniforms for workers at the Anaheim Convention Center and Anaheim Stadium. Those successes, coupled with the industry award for the Northwest designs, have given Disney visions of expansion in the uniform business. Another airline already has approached Disney about helping it change its image.

"Now we have credits," Phelps said. In the interim, ImageMaker is busy with new costumes and uniforms for all of Disney's theme parks. The apparel division is scrambling to design uniforms for Disney's National Hockey League team, the Mighty Ducks, and for Aladdin's Royal Caravan, a summer parade that will premiere April 2 at Disneyland. By Jeff Rowe Orange County Register Walt Disney Co. is getting into the apparel business in a big way.

In addition to the clothing it sells in its rapidly expanding retail stores, Disney is moving swiftly into the burgeoning uniform business, recently designing new uniforms for all 45,000 Northwest Airlines employees. More such outside work seems certain. Based in a warren of offices and workshops at Disneyland, the company's ImageMaker division outfits everyone from street sweepers to performers at all Disney theme parks. Disney's foray into uniform making for other companies replicates the company's meticulous, almost formulaic, approach to business. Study the market, avoid it if you can't dominate it, plan carefully, assemble a skilled and dedicated workforce, then attack.

The company used that approach to build its theme-park, film, music, publishing and retail businesses. For fiscal 1992, Disney had $7.5 billion in revenue, more than twice what it had in 1988. Some industry experts believe Disney is out of its league in the uniform business, where perhaps 500 manufacturers and 5,000 retail stores grapple for customers. Paced by expansion of service businesses one of the bright lights of the recession the uniform industry has been red hot. The industry rang up $5 billion in U.S.
