NOTEBOOK Cone gets $4.25 million 1J1 Johnson vs. Mutombo Staff, wire reports WILLIAM "BILLY" LESESNE has been named the men's and women's soccer coach at Erskine, college President JAMES W. STROBEL said Tuesday. Lesesne, who begins work Feb.

24, was recommended by a search committee from a field of about 40 applicants. Lesesne, a former all-South soccer player at Erskine, returns to his alma mater from the College of Charleston, where he was an assistant. A 1987 Erskine graduate, Lesesne, 26, helped lead the team to the 1986 NAIA district and area titles and into the national tournament. "I look forward to the opportunity to coach at a college I believe in and for a soccer tradition I believe in," Lesesne said. "Living in Due West, I grew up in the Er-.

skine soccer tradition." Lesesne replaces RICKY WRIGHT, who resigned after five seasons with the Flying Fleet to assume head coaching duties at Anderson College. Last season's Erskine men's team finished 11-7-3, won the Palmetto State Conference and finished second in NAIA District 6. The women's team finished 8-10-1 and made the semifi-nals of the NAIA regional playoffs. Short-lived Cougars The Carolina Cougars pro football team of Columbia will sus- Kennedy not surprised by FSU's debut By Dan Foster News sports editor While the 10-4 record in ACC play that Florida State had before its Tuesday night loss to Clemson was a surprise to some, it wasn't to FSU coach Pat Kennedy. Speaking to the Greater Greenville Basketball Club Tuesday, Kennedy said, "Florida State has come into this conference not to play in the bottom half of the conference, but to certainly challenge the Dukes and the North Carolinas, and I think we're going to have to give that the best possible shot that we can." And while everyone knows that football was the reason the ACC and FSU decided on their marriage, Kennedy says it's great for his basketball program.

He said that when it became evident that Florida State was going to be in the league that some of his friends coaching in the conference "tried to prepare me for two things," recruiting and game intensity. "They said No. 1, the effect it will have on recruiting, and I think the reason we see is the difference in the media. I had a team in the Metro that (at one stage in 1989) was 19-2, the best record in Division I basketball, and we were ranked seventh in the nation. "Now all of a sudden at 18 and 6, we're being ranked 16th in the nation.

The recognition factor is much higher." Kennedy added that when FSU was in the Metro Conference, "we could get our foot in the door," trying to recruit the top high school players, "but we couldn't finalize it." As an ACC team he said he had signed four players this year, none from Florida. One, Scott Sheppard, was the runnerup for the state of Indiana's Mr. Basketball title. Another was Derrick Carroll, the 1991 Mr. Basketball from South Carolina, who has attended prep school and will join the Seminoles next season.

The others were Rich Robinson, runnerup as Arkansas player of the and the fourth a 6-11 center rom Atlanta, Jonathan Kemer. Cone, a right-hander who made $2.35 million in 1991, was given the record amount by arbitrator NICHOLAS ZUMAS, who chose his figure over the Mets' $3 million offer. Sierra appeared before arbitrator WILLIAM RENTFRO with the guarantee of the second-highest arbitration salary ever.

The Rangers, who tried to negotiate a one-year deal Tuesday morning, submitted at $3.8 million, a $1.15 million raise. Owners have won 10 of 16 cases decided thus far. Four players settled Tuesday, leaving seven remaining in arbitration with three days to go. Just hours before his hearing was to begin, right-hander JOHN SMILEY and Pittsburgh agreed to $3.44 million, more than double his 1991 salary of $1,425,000. STATE REPORT pend operations Wednesday coincidental with a similar decision by the Professional Spring Football League. The PSFL has been unable to meet its payroll for a month, forcing the first-year league to reconsider its position. "We have set a drop-dead date of March 3," said league president VINCENT SETTE. The PSFL is seeking investors, but, he said, "the economy has hurt our league." Cougars general manager ROMAN GABRIEL said the team will close its doors Wednesday, although he has not decided whether he'll remain with the league.

Wofford opener The Wofford College baseball team opens its 1992 season Wednesday when it travels to Central Wesleyan for a 2 p.m. game.
