ILm MP 9 SM TUESDAY, MAY 18, 1993 4D Rockies Gainer experiences a big-league thrill "Only then did I realize I did something unnormal," Gainer said. Unnormal, indeed. He became the 66th big-league player to homer in his first at-bat and the 12th to do so on the first pitch. The last National League player to homer on the first pitch was Chuck Tanner, for the Milwaukee Braves on April 12, 1955. Gainer had been playing for the Class AAA Colorado Springs Sky Sox until he received his first call to the bigs.

Rockies first baseman Andres Galarraga went on the disabled list with a tear "No hesitation at all," Baylor said about batting Gainer cleanup. "He's only going to remember his first major-league at-bat anyway so what difference does it make where he bats?" Make no mistake, Gainer is not going to forget. The first time he stepped to the plate, he hit a home run. First pitch he ever saw. Pow! Outta here.

Gainer ripped his homer leading off the second inning against Cincinnati starter Tim Pugh. Gainer said he didn't realize what he had done until he was greeted in the dugout by his teammates. Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph CINCINNATI Jay Gainer had just walked into a big-league clubhouse for the first time Friday. As he passed through the doors, he couldn't help but glance at the Colorado Rockies lineup card that was neatly printed in manager Don Baylor's handwriting and taped to a wall. It didn't take long for Gainer's eyes to tneel this: No.

4. IB. "Wow," Gainer said. Welcome to the big leagues, kid. in his right hamstring and Gainer was called up to replace him.

Though Galarraga is the cleanup hitter and Gainer has batted fourth throughout his minor-league career, Gainer didn't know the two would be connected on the first day. "I thought I would bat sixth or seventh if I was going to be in the lineup at all," Gainer said. "I feel a little bit in awe but I really can't think about it because I'm hitting in the four hole." By the time Gainer stepped to the plate for the first time, the Rockies were trailing, 5-0. He was partly to blame as he timidly backed off from a Kevin Mitchell pop-up down the right-field line. The ball should have been caught, but dropped for a double.

Two innings into his first major-league game, Gainer's chief strength and weakness were exposed. He is not here because of his defense. But he can hit the ball out of the park and drive in runs. In two previous seasons in the Saiv Diego organization, Gainer hit 55 homers with 187 RBIs. He was hitting .331 with' five homers and 39 RBIs in 32 games for the Sky Sox.
