Lee Heath's bases-loaded grounder to second capped a two-run ninth-inning rally as the Braves beat the Carolina Mud-cats, 4-3, at Greenville Municipal Stadium Sunday afternoon. It was the fifth straight win for Greenville (16-8) and the sixth straight loss for Carolina (10-14). The Mudcats had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth with the aid of a Braves error. Rich Aude led off the ninth with a walk. Mark Johnson tried to bunt Aude to second, but instead lofted a soft pop to pitcher Vance Lovelace. Lovelace caught the ball, but threw wildly in an attempt to double Aude off first, sending Aude to third. Pinch-hitter Tom Green put the Mudcats ahead with a sacrifice fly to center field off new Braves pitcher Carlos Reyes (4-1). "The momentum shifted to them right there," said Bruce Kimm, Greenville's manager. "But one thing I've told our club Is no matter if the score's 9-0 or 0-9, we're supposed to play the same way all the time." T 2:30. A 1,284. off single from Jose Olmeda. He went to second base on pinch-hitter Tyler Houston's bunt to second. "That leadoff hitter is the key to all innings, generally," Kimm said. "Then, Tyler got the bunt down. That's fundamental baseball that you have to do to win." Brian Kowitz worked Toliver for a walk, and Kevin O'Connor followed with a double to right to score Olmeda and send Kowitz to third. Tim Gillis was intentionally walked and the Mudcats brought the infield in. On a 1-1 pitch, Lee Heath hit a soft blooper between first and second. Second baseman Joe Son-drini fielded the ball on one hop, took a brief look at home and tossed the ball to first for the second out as Kowitz scored the winning run. Greenville starter Blase Sparma took a 1-0 lead into the fifth, but Carolina's Bruce Schreiber hit a two-run homer. Sparma left after seven innings. "I think he's getting a little better each time out," Kimm said. "He's still got a ways to go, but I like what I see." The Braves tied the score on back-to-back doubles by Hector Roa and Olmeda in the seventh. Eddie Perez responded to his start with three hits, including a pair of doubles. After an open date on Monday, the Braves open a four-game home series against the Jacksonville Suns on Tuesday. Brian Boltz (0-0, 0.45) is the scheduled starting pitcher for for Greenville. NOTES: While he walked and scored the go-ahead in the ninth, Carolina's Aude had his hitting streak snapped at 10 games. ... Greenville retained its 3V-game over second-place Orlando in the Southern League East Division. ... After the game, Lovelace was promoted to Richmond. The Catamounts (32 24) had to win three games Sunday, including beating Cinderella team Virginia Military twice. A two-hitter by Derek Cockrell gave WCU a 5-1 victory in the third game of the day. VMI only had to win one of the two games to advance. Junior outfielder Mike Tidick collected four hits as the Catamounts won the second game of the day, 12-5, over VMI. Earlier Sunday, Western Carolina defeated top-seeded Georgia Southern 6-5 with a two-out, run scoring single in the 10th inning by Hurst.
