Charles GREENWOOD OTHER SERVICES Carroll, former Furman trustee dies at 82 BAMBERG Dr. James Pettit Carroll, a minister who served as a trustee of Furman University and as a high-ranking official with the Southern Baptist Convention, died March 29, 1990, at Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg. He was 82. A resident of 208 Sunset Drive, he was a graduate of Wofford College and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1959, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by Furman.

served as a student-pastor at Whitney and Valley Falls Baptist churches in South Carolina and Ewing and Flemingsburg Baptist churches in Kentucky. completing his seminary Studies, he became pastor of Baptist Church, which he Served for nine years. "Then he was pastor of Bamberg first Baptist Church, serving for 31 Jiears until his retirement in 1974. then, he had served as interim pastor for several churches and had taught numerous Bible studies, was recently retired from jerge Creek Baptist Church in Go-Van. He served as moderator of the Barnwell-Bamberg Association; as trustee of Connie Maxwell Children's Home; and as first vice president of the South Carolina Baptist Convention.

He preached the convention ser-riibn in 1961. In 1979, the George's Creek Baptist Church observed his 50th anniversary as an ordained minister. Melvin Brown WALHALLA Melvin Brown, 51, of South Catherine Street, died Mirch 28, 1990, at Greenville Memorial Hospital. --'He was a former employee of Sangamo. Surviving are his wife, Maggie Reeder Brown of the home; his stepmother, Sarah Brown of Walhalla; a son, Melvin Anthony Brown of the home; five daughters, Gladys McCoy of Seneca, Marcelyn Hamil-tpn of Anderson, Cynthia Brown and Apartments, died March 29, 1990, at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Clearmont Baptist Church, where she was recognized in 1985 as "Outstanding Person of the Year." Leatherwood FOUNTAIN INN Loleta Thompson Leatherwood, 84, formerly of Fountain Inn, died March 28, 1990, in Columbia. She was a retired schoolteacher and a member of Fountain Inn First Baptist Church. Surviving are two stepdaughters, Glenna L. Chandler of Pelzer and Theda L. Acker of Belton.

Llndsey GREENWOOD Rena Cothran Lindsey, 86, of 409 Jennings died March 29, 1990, at Self Memorial Hospital. She attended Anderson College and was a graduate of Furman University.

She formerly taught in the Greenville County School System and later was co-organizer of Lindsey's Men Shop in Greenwood, where she worked until her retirement. She was a member of South Main Street Baptist Church, a former Sunday School teacher, YWA leader and social chairman. She was a charter member of Gardenia Garden Club and Greenwood Business and Professional Women's Club. After her retirement, she was a volunteer at Self Memorial Hospital for 10 years. Surviving is her son, David Lindsey of Atlanta, Ga.

Ruby Lee Martin Ruby Lee Densmore Martin, 79, of 8 Norwood Monaghan community, died March 29, 1990, at Greenville Memorial Hospital following several years of declining health. She was an employee of Monaghan Mill for 37 years and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are a daughter, LaVern M. Simpson of Greer; a son, William E. Martin of Greenville; a sister, Thelma Wood of Seneca; and a brother, Frank Densmore of Greer.

Graveside services will be in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Turnerville, at a time to be announced. Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Thomas McAfee Funeral Home. The family is at the home of LaVern M. Simpson, 152 N.

Rutherford Road, Greer. Gene Nimmons SENECA Gene Nimmons, 70, of 207 S. Townville died March 28, 1990, at Oconee Memorial Hospital. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and a member of Seneca Presbyterian Church, where she had served as president of Women of the Church. She was a member and past president of the Seneca Garden Club and at the time of her death was president of the Seneca Literary and Civic Club.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Herbert (Kate) Morgan of Seneca and Mrs. Tom (Will) Allen of Amarillo, Texas. The body is at the home of Mrs. Herbert Morgan, Carson Road, Seneca, where services will be held at 11 a.m.

Harris Owen Wilfred Harris, 72, of 104 Heatherly Drive, died March 28 at his home. He owned and operated Harris Radio and T.V. Repair Shop for 40 years before his retirement in 1982. He was of the Baptist faith and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving is his brother, Lloyd C. Harris of Greenville. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Thomas McAfee Funeral Home. Robert Harris Robert Harris, 80, of 7 Fludd died March 25 at a local hospital. He was a deacon of Mountain View Baptist Church and captain of Circle No.

She was a charter member.and past president of the Pilot Club of Greenwood, secretary of the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army for five years, a member and secretary of Greenwood Woman's Club during its organization, secretary of Magnolia Cemetery Board, and a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. Noah L. Smith Noah Lafayette Smith, 12 Carlton died March 27, 1990, at St. Francis Hospital. He was owner and operator of Noah Smith's Auto Parts for 50 years before his retirement. He was a U.S.

He was associated with Cecil's Inc. of Spartanburg for 40 years and was a past vice president of that company. Later, he was president of Paul D. Davis Construction Co. for seven years.

Most recently, he was construction manager for CeCon Construction Inc. of Spartanburg. He was a U.S. Navy Seabees veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific. He was a member of Cannon's United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Joe Cooksey Davis of the home; a daughter, Norma Davis McCraw of Spartanburg; and a son, Paul Dupree Davis Jr. of Spartanburg. Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, Spartanburg, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m.

Burnett GREER Nettie Howell Burnett, 85, of 415 Pennsylvania died March 28, 1990, at Piedmont Lutheran Health Care after several months of illness. She was a retired employee of J. P. Stevens Co. Greer plant, and a member of Concord' United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Robert H. "Bob" Burnett of Eastover; and two sisters, Mildred Shirley of Greer and Ella Brookshire of Spartanburg. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at The Wood Mortuary, Greer, with burial in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m.

Friday at the mortuary. The family is at the home of Mildred Shirley, 414 Pennsylvania Greer. Thomas L. Cantrell COWPENS Thomas Leon Cantrell, 51, of Route 1, McGinnis Road, died March 28, 1990, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. He was a wire technician at Grass Metallic of America a U.S.

Air Force veteran and a member of Chesnee Southside Baptist Church, where he served as an usher. Surviving are his wife, Hilda Lamb Cantrell of the home; two daughters, Rena Cantrell of the home and Mary Cantrell Elder of Chesnee; a son, Wayne Cantrell of the home; three sisters, Carolyn Jackson and Jean Mosley, both of Chesnee, and Gail Jackson of Spartanburg; and four brothers, Dupre Cantrell and Jerry Cantrell, both of Boiling Springs, Charles Cantrell of Mayo and Danny Cantrell of Spartanburg. Services: 4 p.m. Friday at South-side Baptist Church, Chesnee, with burial in Springhill Memorial Gardens. Forest Lawn Mortuary, Chesnee.

Walter P. Connell Walter Powell Connell, 80, of 106 E. Augusta Place, died March 29. He was a retired machinist for Adams Inc. and a member of Greenville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a son, Walter Jerry Connell of Merritt Island, a sis 1 i 1.
