In 1930 Ormal B. Trick She initially worried she might be prevented from flying bpcause of her sex but found that paying for flight lessons was a greater obstacle. A pilot told her he thought she could make $100 if she made a parachute jump at a convention of the American Legion in Medford. In a 1981 interview with The Oregonian, she recalled the terror of that first jump. "I was on the wing hanging on for dear life," she said.

The pilot tired of waiting for her to jump and rapped on her knuckles with what she thought was a fire extinguisher. "I didn't realize I was going until I was on my way down," she said. J.G. "Tex" Rankin, a Portland stunt pilot, heard of her reputation as a daredevil and offered her a job making parachute jumps at his weekly air show on Swan Island. She soon had enough money to learn to fly.

She learned stunts in an OX-5 Waco 10 plane and became a prime attraction at Rankin's air shows, dazzling spectators with loops and snap rolls. Known as "Princess Kick a Hole in the Sky," she went barnstorming across the United States with Rankin in 1931. She gave exhibitions in 38 states during a three-month period in 1931, and set several world records. One of them performing 56 inverted snap rolls remains unbroken, a record for both men and women.
